Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't get Expression correct?

    I used the following expression on my form

    Amount_Due-total(Payment_Info->Amount_Of_Payment,GRP->DEBTOR_CARD)

    When I try it on a letter the following error occurs, I tried everything I could think of and read what I thought applied but no luck.

    I want to create a letter with a calc field showing the current balance owed. Taking the Amount Due - Total of payment in the Group Debtor Card.

    Thanks for any assist.

    Art,

    This might seem silly but I don't understand the expression within the ( ). What is the , supposed to mean? Does the expression work on the form?

      YOu say the following error ocurred - but you didn't say what the error was. What was the error message?

      Is the letter based on the same SET or TABLE that contains all the fields used in the expression?

        Ken,

        Yes the expression worked on the form I made.

        The error message I received was

        Bad Parameter Summarise over: group'GRP->Debtor_Card'not found.

        What I wanted to do is take the total sum of payments made and deduct that figure from the opening balance to get the current balance.

        Thanks

            Art,

            Your expression for your form suggests that you are using a set with a parent table called "debtor_card" and a child table called "payment_info". Is that Correct?. The expression as shown will calculate the total payments from the payment_info records that match the record in the debtor_card group, i.e., the current parent record. Then it subtracts that value form the amount due to give the balance due. Is this what you want to do?

            Reports and letters use the group reference differently than a form based on a set. If you use the calculated field genie in the letter editor, you will find that there is no reference to the parent record by the table name. However, there is a group created by Alpha called "addressee", which references the current parent record. Therefore you have to use a different name to reference the group.

            Amount_Due-total(Payment_Info->Amount_Of_Payment,GRP->Addressee)

            If you want to use a similar calculated field on a report, you have to create a group break to break the report on the current parent record. For instance, if I create a group which breaks the report when some identifier changes in the parent (like customer id) and call it current_record, the expression for the calculated field would be;

            Amount_Due-total(Payment_Info->Amount_Of_Payment,GRP->Current_Record)

            The literature is a "little" vague on groupings and how to reference them correctly. However, if you use the genie, you will see what groups and group names are available.

            Attached is a little example showing the use of the above calculated fileds on a formm a report, and a letter.

              Jerr,

              I just want to say, thanks to you I now have a balance owed field on my letter that workes. I appreciate the help. Thanks for the examples also.
              Maybe someday I can return the favor.
