Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows XP issues!

I've just installed Alpha 5 v4.5 on my Windows XP machine and am running into all sorts of problems... mainly stability. I get random errors, lockups, etc. Is Alpha Software addressing this issue?

    RE: Windows XP issues!

    Ryan,

Do a search for Windows XP on the v5 and v4.5 boards. You might find some answers. I remember some issues have to do with the way XP was installed.

I'm connected to a few different network printers. The problems never happen when I'm trying to print though. Why? Is there a known issue with the combination of Alpha 5, Windows XP, and certain printers?

its rare - but certain printer drivers cause problems. I think it was more problematic with 98 than XP though.

if you are on a network - are you running Alpha for more than one user?

did you merely download Alpha to one computer and are running it from that one computer?

I am on a network, but each of us has our own copy of Alpha 5 running from our local machines.

The printers I'm using are a Lexmark Optra N, and a Lexmark Optra T. They didn't seem to cause any problems when I was running Alpha 5 on Windows 98SE though.

              Ryan,

Are you saying (1) that other users on the network, under 98/ME are okay, (2) that you were on 98/ME and doing okay, and, (3) you bought a new machine with XP installed but after putting your Alpha app on it your workstation bombs?

              try this:
while you are NOT on the net work, running locally, install a copy of your program - being sure everything is local. See if the problems go away. I know for a fact Alpha and XP get along just fine. I have it running with big apps in several locations.

Thanks. I'll try that if I need to. I just set it to run in compatibility mode for Win 2000 and I haven't seen an error yet.

I've been running it on my XPlaptop for quite a while and have never had a problem.
I use a lexmark E210 printer at home and a Optra E at school.

                    RE: Windows XP issues!

I just bought XP and will be installing it via the "Upgrade" option (only way my scanner will work since no XP drivers for it).

Alpha5 is already loaded on my computer. Does anybody forsee any possible problems?? Or, should I uninstall Alpha and re-install it after installing XP?

                    Thoughts? Experiences with this?

You should NOT have to reinstall Alpha after insatlling XP. I have installed XP on a number of machines w. no problems/conflicts w. Alpha.
