Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Startup Behavior

This is a small item, but it always bothers me when a program behaves inconsistently or illogically.

A database I am developing uses an Autoexec script to call a password dialog. If I start A5, then choose the database from the previous files list, the dialog appears, I type in my password, and go.

However, if I start the program from a desktop icon that references the .adb file, the dialog appears (and appears to have focus), but you can't begin typing until you have clicked the window with the mouse. Is there another way to open the database directly from a desktop icon that will bring up the password dialog with focus?

Henry, this 'small' item has generated a lot of discussion. Try searching for related message threads (topics dealing with setting focus on startup). I don't think there is consensus on what most do when this annoyance bothers them. As a practical matter, my users haven't complained about it, even though it still bothers me.

I have never ran into this problem so I can only assume it's because I always place my login fields on a conditional object on the MainMenu. It always has focus when the app starts. Guess I got lucky then and missed this "problem".

Actually, this appears to be a windows setup issue or so I have been told by those far more learned in such things than I.

You can (I am told) cure it by changing something in the registry but as the change increases vulnurability to viruses I figured I could live with the problem.

I'm like Tom. It bugs me but my users could care less.

something that works about HALF the time is at the oninit event of the first form that loads is to put sys_send_keys("{esc}")

                RE: Startup Behavior

If you use the sys_send_keys() method it will work ok in any version of a5v4, but will create some interesting problems in a5v5. In A5v5, the dialog box will have focus on startup, everytime, since it is genreated by xbasic, not a windows call. If you send the esc key, you will close the dialog, which defeats the whole idea.

It is a nuisance, but as Bill points out, it is due to the way windows works and most users don't have a problem with it.

I have since tried this database out on two other computers running W98, and the problem does NOT occur. It is only on my XP machines that this anomaly shows up. I wonder if that would also be true of Windows NT/2000 systems. Curious.
