Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Data in memo field dissapearing

I have several databases that were working ok and now, I don't know what might have changed, if I edit a memo field the data dissapears. Even if there is data in the field, when I open the memo and save it, the data is gone.
I am using v4.5 build 266 with Windows XP Pro. Any suggestions?

    Richard,

There are several possible causes. Search this forum for

    memo disappear

There is a specific recommended approach for handling data entry into memo fields in a networked multi-user environment. This has been discussed before, too. If you haven't implemented the recommended approach, you might want to consider it. -- tom

      Richard,

On re-reading my earlier post this morning I realize I forgot to add this...

If you have trouble finding the material I am referring to let us know. I think it should be easy, but I've been living in this forum so long that I sometimes forget that others find it a confusing place occasionally.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

After doing a little more research I find the following:
If I edit a memo field, using the pencil, I lose all the memo data. If I use a form and type directly into the memo field, the data stays. When it does dissapear, it is gone for good. If I edit in a browse, and save, the data is gone for good. It seems there is a problem with the memo editor.

Just to let you all know: I am working on a standalone PC, no networking. I am not using any programing. I just have a browse and a form for editing data. Again, these databases were working ok until something changed. I have upgraded to Win XP Pro and Alpha Five 4.5. Now memo fields that used to work, no longer work.
            Thanks, Dick

              Richard,

How about zipping up a small sample from your database, with instructions on how to replicate the problem (step by step) ?

With Test open, use the browse and edit the comment field. I have to click on the pencil in order to edit that field. Use the form to edit the comment. If I just type into the comment field, the data stays. If I click on the pencil and save, the data is gone.

                  Richard,

There is no memo field in the Associations table. This is the table your form and its embedded browse are based upon. If I'm looking at the right form you will need to modify the structure of your table. If I'm in the wrong place please furnish detailed, step by step, instructions on how to replicate the issue.

                    Richard,

Let me clarify. There is no Comment field in the Associations table.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

The disappearing memo field information on the message board up to this point only seems to have been related to pcAnywhere. This problem now appears to go beyond pcAnywhere and is related to how A5 V4.* saves memos. Can anyone tell me if this has been addressed in A5 V5?

You are quite right that if you are in the memo edit dialog box and press either save or F9 the memo on some systems and on some systems with pcAnywhere will erase the memo. If however, you manipulate the memo information without the built dialog (the one you get by pressing the pencil) you can work around this problem. You have already discovered the easiest work around and that is to type directly into the memo field. Browse tables do not allow this unless you put them on a form and then have the memo field placed directly on the form with the browse so you can type directly into it. The problem with this is memo field integrity. For instance if you move off the form without saving the record you can corrupt the memo field data for this and all following record. Therefore, if you do this, you must force the user to save the record before leaving the form. If you go to Dr. Wayne's site you will see how to do this to help maintain not only the integrity of the memo fields but all data. I have used techniques similar to his (Dr. Wayne's) and have had virutually no data corruption problems including memo fields.

                        Jeffrey,

You may be right, but Richard's problem may be simpler. There's no memo field in his table, nor is there an FPT file in his database (at least not in the one he posted here). I'm guessing he built the form, and then changed the structure, and is now perplexed that the form doesn't work.

I am not sure what you mean by Associations table. In my database "Test" under tables/sets, I right click on the "test" and look at "Edit structure" there are two fields. Name and Comment.

Richard, look again at what you posted here. there's no test table, it's a database dealing with condos and there's only one form. Please tell me I'm not studying the wrong database.

                              Richard,

I checked again and found that the mistake was on my end. I saved your file to the wrong folder and was examining the wrong database. My mistake. Sorry.

I now have the right one and will check again.
