Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need Programmer

I need someone to do some minor programming 4 me. I am an insurance agent with 400 plus clients in the data base. My typical need is only 1-4 hours at a time (every 2 to 9 months). I use A5v4.0 build 95. You need to be very good at working with sets, reports, forms, browses, etc. Please let me konw what you would charge/hr., minimum chg? And what is your experience with A5?
    Thanks,
    Rich Mooney,

    RE: Need Programmer

    Richard,
I have been using Alpha 5 since Version 1.0 and have a lot of experience in developing simple database applications to solve complex problems. My background is accounting (CPA) and currently doing consulting work since I am semi-retired (not enough income to be fully retired!)

One of my clients is a large, multi-location insurance agency in North Carolina and I have developed a couple of simple applications for them to manage their prospects, X-dates, etc. Nothing fancy.

I have developed fully integrated database systems for two clients in the Mental Health Service. Both are out-of-town, so we do lots of communicating via the Internet.

Let me know what kind of database work you need and I'll be able to tell you if I can help you or not.

My regular fees are $75.00 per hour and I never charge for clearing bugs, if any. Nevertheless, I will always give you a quote before I do any work so you'll know up-front what it will cost you.

      RE: Need Programmer

      Hello Sir,

My name is Chuck Bunnell, I have been programming with alpha since Alpha 3 discovery edition, about 10 years now, prior to that, I was programming in PRO-IV (McDonnel Douglas) relational database systems. I have over 25 years as a programmer, and have written many custom applications for companies over the years. I usually carge $65.00/hour. Though if your needs are similar to an application that I have already written for a company, then my code up time will be much shorter, and therefore your billing hours will be greatly reduced. I can be contacted directly at [email protected]

      Thank you for you consideration
      Chuck

        Upgrade:

Before you do anything else, go to Alpha's website and download the FREE patch that will upgrade your A5 program to Ver 4.03. I haven't looked in a long time, but I think the latest build for that version is 230.

I cannot believe you are still using build 95, which was full of bugs. Please take immediate advantage of the wonderful, free patches posted on Alpha's website by their dedicated staff.

          RE: Need Programmer

I couldn't resist replying. I'm in Aurora, CO and have 2 distinct advantages in your request ...
          1) I've been working with Insurance agencies on automation, including writing programs for them, since 1989 and therefore understand exceptionally well what your needs are, and
          2) I've been using A5 for about 8 years.

I personally use Alpha 5v4 (current build) to run my business which includes managing my reps, customers, marketing, etc.

By the way, I'm also the Regional Manager for InStar which is a full feature Agency Management system. We have a product for the retail agency and wholesale agency.

If you'd like to pursue this further, please contact me at 303-755-8350. My website is www.iac-iss.com. I'm certain I would be able to help you in your database needs. Rate for programming is $60-75/hr depending on the project. In other words, do you know exactly what you want done and it's just a matter of doing it or would you require my exstensive experience in working with insurance agencies on automation to guide and assist you in taking your system to an even higher level?

By the way, I agree with the other post strongly recommending you to upgrade to the current build. I remember all of the bugs your build. Ouch.
