Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto Increment

Can the auto increment field be set to auto increment in 10's instead of the standard 1? I am working on an application for multi users generating quotes and thought I could use the "1" digit to code each user and let the field be increased so the last digit would not change and always identify the user who generated the quote. Example: User Joe (ID# 1) User Sam (ID# 2) etc. The auto incerment field would then read say 10011, 10021, 10031, if Joe generated the records, then Sam does the next record and it would be #10042, and so on. Also when a user generates a record on a laptop in the field and wants to sync with the network, it would not mess up the numbering. Anybody know how to accomplish this task. Any advise or even better suggestion would be appreciated.

I will soon be upgrading to V5, so if anyone knows if this can be done in V5 I can wait.

    Thanks,
    Phil

    Phil,

If it can be done, and I think it can, it would have to be written in Xbasic. I do not believe v5 has this capability other than using Xbasic. The field rules tab on both v4.5 and v5 look the same.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: Auto Increment

See the autoincrement article inthe newsletter that came out last month. that should answer ALL your questions and show u how to do what u want.

It is a VERY good article.

        RE: Auto Increment

        Phil,

A simple dodge for this would be to just increment a field by one's in the normal way. You can then create a second calculated field that combines this incremented field and concatinates the user number in the way you want to form a second field. The second field is what you would use.

          RE: Auto Increment

          Phil,

Most database designers would recommend against the approach your are considering because you're using a single field to represent two things, namely a single quotation, and the identity of the person who generated it. You will have trouble if, later on, you need to change one thing but not the other. For example, if the operator discovers later that it's really Joe's quote instead of Sam's, there's no way to preserve the original quote number while correcting the identity of the generator. I think most would agree that Alpha Five tables work best if each field is used for only one purpose. In your case I would have two fields in each record. One to identify the quote transation and one to identify the person who generated it.

            RE: Auto Increment

Many thanks to all for the input. I am rethinking my approach. I originally had designed the application with basically a combination of ideas as suggested by Tom and David. I had kept the two fields separate and on all reports and forms placed them side by side to appear as one field. I was just seeing if there was a better way of doing it. My real concern, and even my proposed method wouldn't even address it, is synching filed generated records with the network database. Thanks again for all the responses.
