Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Thanks Bill

I guess Richard & Selwyn would have had smiles on their faces over the speculation that has gone on over the pricing structure. (and I don't mean that in a nasty way) Pricing is clearly a sensitive issue and IMHO these prices look spot on to me!

          Author: Richard Rabins

          File:

preliminary Run Time pricing (not finalized)

          3-user RT 699
          10-user RT 1499
          20-user RT 1999

          As lenny describes,

If you are consultant you can sell your application to an unlimited number of clients provided your client has no more than 3 or 10 or 20 simultaneous users.

Based on this, we believe that most people who want the runtime will be able to get it for $699 or $1499 which we think is reasonable.

          Thanks

            RE: The REAL v5 prices

I hate to say it but I am 99% sure that the vast majority of the small business clients I deal with are going to have serious concerns with these prices. I am not saying their concerns would be rational and I will probably be able to sell some of them on taking the plunge. But I'm also sure some flat out won't be interested in moving from V4.5 and many new prospects just won't want to gamble this much money on a product they've never heard of.

I hope the pricing works for Alpha but I wouldn't put my money on it.

The prices look right on I have FileMaker Pro. $299.00
and the runtime at $499.00 that can't do half what Alpha 5
              does. Thanks Richard

                RE: The REAL v5 prices

So we would apply any money we spent on v4.5 to the upgrade price to come to our true upgrade cost? For example, the upgrade cost is $299, but I spent $149 on v4.5, so my final cost would be $150. And the unlimited runtime upgrade cost is $1499, but I spent $499 on the v4.5 unlimited upgrade, so it would cost $1000. So the total upgrade cost would be $1150. Is this correct?

Last year I spent $656 total for new product, not an upgrade. Hmmmm?

                  So,

For new users and in-house developers, the initial investment to use the product in a multi-user environment is $1,250.00 (single developer & 10 user RT)

                    Van,

v4.5 was NOT a totaly new product. Far from it. V5 is much, much closer to a totaly new product.

Sounds good, so quit the wingeing. There is always someone who says "that is too expensive".
Those who expect shareware prices should get shareware programs....

BUT come on Messrs Rabins, can we have the goods now!

                        Ray,

I suspect there will be many small clients who will not opt for v5. What they have is working fine and until there is a feature that you can show them which will benefit them, they won't spend the money. That's business. It's up to you to develop an app they will do them better than what they have now.

                          RE: The REAL v5 prices

You misunderstood me. When I purchase software, I either purchase the full product at the full price or, if I own a previous version or a competitor's version, I purchase an upgrade to the current version at an upgrade price.

When we purchased v4.5 we purchased the full product at the full price. If we move to v5, we will be purchasing an upgrade to the current version.

I was comparing what we paid for the full version of 4.5 to what it will cost for the upgrade to 5.

                          Thank you,
                          vkj

Also, I was trying to clarify if my understanding of the upgrade prices were correct. If we already own v4.5, will it cost us the upgrade cost that was shown at the beginning of this thread or will it cost us the upgrade cost minus what we have invested in v4.5 (as was stated on the website when we purchased v4.5)?
