Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    shadow database questions

i have successfully tested my application on terminalserver
    with 5 users online.

i have been booting each station from the same shadow.

my question is...do i need to create seperate sub-dir ?
what is the consequence ? if i do not do ?

because essentially this is one "c" drive for all 5 users !
unlike the conventianal way, where station 1's c:drive is notthe same as sttion2's c:drive

By the way, one copy on runtime 4.5 is all i am using.
accasinally got into file locking issues.

    you comment is greatly appreciated

    Ken,

"By the way, one copy on runtime 4.5 is all i am using.

I beliece you should have Runtime on each machine and only the app on the server. That way, the app runs faster on the client computers. At least, that's my understanding.

Others who know more about this can answer the other questions.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: shadow database questions

We are interpreting "i have been booting each station from the same shadow." to mean that the shadow files themselves are on the server. If this is wrong, please be more explicit.

The runtime executables should be on each workstation and each workstation should be optimized. This means that each workstation will have a shadow directory on it. This shadow directory will normally be directly under the directory containing the runtime executables.

Having a shadow directory on the server provides no advantage.

        RE: shadow database questions

Thanks Cal for trying to help.

My appplication now reside in a Window Terminal Server.
ALl 5 users are located across the country and are connected to the server via ISDN/Internet connection.

They are simply watching the "video" screen only very similar to "PC-Anywhere", thus only one PC (the terminal server running all 5 (sessions) of Alpha 5 run time.
I am curious, since these 5 sessions or more are running essentially in the same PC (same C: drive).

Do I need to create "shadow" for each one of them.
I have a feeling I might have to do just that.

I am curious what others have done this.
If you would like to see, I try to get a permission to issue you the IP address and you can come on-line to use my application over a typical cable-speed internet.

we are anticipating about 30 users come in online if everything approved to go this way.

we are now having 90 users on the terminal server running all legacy application. But the Alpha 5 will eventually take over if/when i can get this done..

          RE: shadow database questions

          Ken,

Are your users usually the same people? I would still install the runtime on their pc's and optimize them even given the scenario you have. Right now, you are not only moving data across the ISDN, but also the A5 program files, database forms, operations, reports, scripts, etc. You just want to ensure a way to notify all of them if you make changes and they need to re-optimize.

            RE: shadow database questions

One copy of Runtime and one shadow database is all that is necessary.
If the actual database resides on the Terminal Services machine, there is no reason to optimize. If the actual database resides on a machine other than the Terminal Services machine, then you are reducing network traffic by optimizing.
However the practical limits of what you are doing should be considered. Finian had some thoughts on this in a prior thread "cpu usage". I'd take a look at that before making an assumption about how many simultaneous users you could have without problems.

              HMM,

I agree that running without "optimize" appear pretty fast.
I think I am going to get away wihtout Optimizing.

Occasinally running into error and not too sure why.
other than, they are all running across the country.
I have a user come on line from Singapore to enter
data into my application. And it open up all the possibility.

I am now busy altering user's profile to allow me to identify their date/time of logging. because now all date and time are 100% equal to the server's time (which is PST)
and when the East Coast user coming, I need to add 3 hours etc.,
