Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting to A5 from A4

I am converting a time keeping sytem from A4. (see Dr. Waynes' example at Chapter 25 of his Xbasic volume for a similar database) In the old application I can prepare a report for a specific customer using a menu option that uses the "read" function in a script. The application selects a browse table and the user then highlights the name of the desired client. The script then reads the client id number and places it a variable which is then used in the report filter.

I cannot find an equivalent function in A5. It is probably obvious but I cannot come up with a solution after pouring over the manuals and Dr. Waynes books. Also my searches on the Alpha site lead me no where.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    John:

There are two possibilties that come to mind:

Although somewhat more complex in nature than {READ}, the UI_GET_LIST_ARRAY() command is one possibility. It is detailed in the Alpha Five XBasic manual.

The second possibility is to open a browse table, and, using the OnRowDblClick event, set a global variable to the value of a field. The OnRowDblClick event is available in version 4.5, but may not be available in earlier versions - I'm not sure.

You sound like your well equipped with Dr. Wayne's books, so I assume this is enough detail for the moment.

RE: Converting to A5 from A4

      Hello John:

Using Windows gives you more options for accomplishing the same thing you did one way in A4. Sometimes the problem is deciding which methodology to use. Craig gave you one or two examples and I will add a couple extra details.

One option is attaching a dialog box to a report. I know it sounds complicated, but once you've done it a couple of times, you will see it isn't very hard.

What is a dialog box? It is nothing more than a small form that pops up and you can handle it a couple of different ways.

I generally give the user the option of manually typing in a Cust_ID number in a box attached in this example to the vCust_ID variable [I made up the name vCust_ID] I entered onto the dialog forms list of variables.

Once you the user has typed in the Cust_ID, in this case it becomes the variable vCust_ID, that info is passed to the report which will be filtered upon that vCust_ID variable. This is the tricky part and I used the PrintInit event to do such. Barry Rochford wrote an excellent article on Peter Wayne's site explaining how to do such.

As for the report itself, the filter is very easy to set up:

      Cust_ID = vCust_ID

Another option for the user is a button on the dialog form which the user clicks. Then as Craig mentioned, utilize the Xbasic array function which will create a list of Customers [sorted alphabetically] along with their Cust_ID number. Once that list pops up, all the user has to do is click on the name of the customer he/she wants to print. Then you must capture that info as a variable and filter the report as described in my first option above.

What I generally do with arrays is display the Cust_ID number on the left as follows:

      Cust_ID Customer
      ---------------------
      057 Paul Johnson
      169 John Walker
      204 Patrick O'Brien

Let's say the user selects John Walker. I then use the (left,3)function to capture the Cust_ID, which in this case is "169". That number, "169" becomes your new vCust_ID, as described above. Once again, the report filter is:

      Cust_ID = vCust_ID [in this case it is "169")

and then Alpha will print only John Walker's records.

I know this must sound overwhelming but it really isn't as hard as I made it sound. You have to work your way through it a couple of times and then it becomes fairly easy.

Note: My guess is the info above will not line up properly.

        Craig and Robert:

I didn't intend to be impolite in not responding to your help. I can only work on my apllications in my spare time (which is mostly non-existent).

Based upon your suggestions I kept looking for code examples. I found a good article on Dr. Wayne's website entitled "Hooray for Arrays". Although I have not been able to work on my application I think the article will provide me with one method to solve my problem.

        Thanks again,

        John
