Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Opportunistic Locking

I have been contacted by network engineers working with a customer running an Alpha 5 v 4 application. They are installing a new network based on Win2000 workstations and server. Their question is .... if "Opportunistic Locking" is enabled on the workstations will this cause a problem for Alpha Five?

Does anyone know? They were good enough to reference a Microsoft Q document of Q296264 however this did not help me out much.

    Thanks for the help!

    Rhett,

For my edification, would you mind giving a brief synopsis of Opportunistic Locking?

    Thanks,

      RE: Opportunistic Locking

      Rhett,

My understanding is that Opportunistic locking is not supported by the dBase format.

      Opportunistic locking is supported by
      MS Access - All versions
      Sybase - All versions
      MS SQL 7
      MS SQL 2000
      MS SQL 2002

The database in Alpha will automatically use record locks upon edit mode and will release them on posting mode. This will be handled by the database backend and not by the operating system.

Where did you see or read that Alpha supports Opportunistic locking???

        RE: Opportunistic Locking

        Ken,
        For your information and education.

        There are numerous lock types.
        Optimistic
        Batch Optmistic
        Pessimistic - used by Alpha
        Read Only
        Unspecified

Unspecified-A specific lock type has not been specified or determined.

ReadOnly-Read-only; the current execution cannot modify data.

Pessimistic-Pessimistic locks; locks instantiated on a record-by-record basis when edit mode is applied to a record.

Optimistic-Optimistic locks; locked are initiated on a record-by-record basis, but only when updates are applied and a record is being updated.

BatchOptimistic-Optimistic batch updates; used for batch update mode rather than immediate update mode.

Then there are Marshal Options and of course lets not forget the many different variations of client vs server side cursors.

But the good thing about Alpha is, the end user does not have to concern themselves with the above.

            RE: Opportunistic Locking

            Hi Ray,

There is no specific reference to Opportunistic Locking in any Alpha Five documentation.

The question arose from a network engineer. They are configuring Win2000 workstations for a customer and wanted to know if they configure the workstation to use "opportunistic locking" will it cause a problem for Alpha Five.

            Do you know?

              RE: Opportunistic Locking

              Rhett,

It should not since Opportunistic Locking is not supported by DBase, however a few years back this did create a severe issued with paradox tables and NT. Indexes where constantly out of date.

Even if Opportunistic Locking is not supported by DBase, the operating system may not release its memory cache creating problems with Alpha if you had a power failure and did not have the workstation or server, on a UPS. By default Opportunistic Locking is always on and the registry needs to be modified in order to turn it off.

Keep in mind Opportunistic Locking is on by default and people have been using Alpha with Windows 2000 for quite some time. These people have reported no issues, but like anything else, try it, if you suspect problems turn it off.
