Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Inserting Fields

Is there any way to in an already existing table to insert new fields or reorder them?

    RE: Inserting Fields

Yes there is. Simply add the field to the bottom of the structure and then highlight the row by clicking on the little box on the far left of the row. Once it's highlighted, release the mouse button and then, while it's still highlighted, grab it with the mouse and move it to whatever spot your little heart desires.

Just like Ken said and to insert a field to any part of a table, click on the row below where the new field is to be and press the magic Insert button on your keyboard. It works every time.

        Keith,

Some have mentioned about a possible problem with inserting but I don't know if it's the method you use or not. I hope not as that's a good way to do it.

          RE: Inserting Fields

Adding fields has been reported as causing problems for some, but this frequently seems to be linked to the use of long field names (over 10 characters) since these are stored in the data dictionary and it is possible to lose the link. Adding a field at the bottom of the existing list seems reliable, since this doesn't effect any existing fields. While there is not requirement to have the fields in any real order, if you want to change the listing order, I would stongly suggest that you save any additions, compact the database, and then go in and reorder. This has never caused a problem for me.

Thanks to all of you for the information. But I hate asking stupid questions. Is there a reference book with detailed info about things like this. Unfortunately there have been several things I couldn't find in the User's Guide or I couldn't quite get what I was supposed to do. Ed

              Ed,

The best book or tool is this message board. Searches yeild a wealth of information and as you know, questions are eagerly answered. No question is a stupid question unless you ask the same question within an hour. Seriously, ask away for we've all asked questions that at one point or anohter, when learning the answer, have said, "Oh Dah!". I've asked my share ofd them. You'll be in good company.

                For what it's worth:

I haven't had any problem - recently - with adding or inserting new fields but I did have problems in the past. The reason I had problems was because I tried to do too many things at once. If you simply add or insert a field it will probably be OK. But, if you add a few fields then move some around and rename a couple more, even the computer can get confused.

My current method is to do one step at a time - add the desired fields and save the changes THEN move the ones you want to move and save the changes THEN rename as needed and save the changes. (Do you see a pattern here?) So far, this is working for me.

Alpha will do so many things in so many ways, that I doubt any reference book could cover everything. Ken is right, use the message board. If you can't find it in the existing reference materials, run a search on the forum. If that doesn't solve you problem, post the question. This message board is supported by many people who can help. Most probably learned in the same way you are, by asking questions.
