Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Displaying only parent of specific child records

I know this is a well worn subject but I am not getting it. I have a typical invoice_hdr=>invoicedetail parent/child set linked by an invoice_num field. I have a form that displays a browse for the parent and a browse for the child. When I click on the invoice number on the parent browse the children associated with the record shows up on the second browse. The child table contains a field called "unfinished".

I want to produce a similar form but the difference is that I only want the parents of children with a value of .t. in "unfinished". The only way I could do this is to run a script on the child records that continuously updates a similar flag on the parent record. The form basically filters out parents that have an .f. value on this flag.

I understand inverting a set by my design efforts hae failed. When I try to produce the form outlined above I couldn't display a unique value for each parent. In other words: If I have three children attached to an invoice, the invoice_num will appear three times. I only want each parent to appear once. I don't have a clue at this point on how to get it to behave like the form mentioned above using this strategy.

    Greg,

I don't think it's possible to get it to display 'exactly' like the form you describe. By definition each of the linked child records are related to the same parent record. When you invert the set and display the former child table records as parents you are bound to see the same 'repeating' (former) parent table record. I suggest you use the inverted set, but modify the form. Don't put the parent (now child) records in a browse. -- tom

Actually, I am trying to maintain the same parent=>child structure in the new form. I am hoping that when I click on the parent (or reasonable facsimile thereof) I could get all it's children. The only difference would be that the only parents that would show up on the form are the parents whose children have a .t. value in the "unfinished" field.

I was hoping that by having the parent in a browse the user can select the parent he was interested in working on. Is there no way of displaying unique records on an inverted set?

I guess the only way still available is to run a script that that will flag the parent of child records that contain a value of .t.

        Greg,

Perhaps flattenquery() can help. Have you tried using it? I think it's documented in the discussion of tbl.query_create() in the xbasic reference manual.

I would suggest either a filtered index or script your form so that the a query is renewed w. every new record.

            Greg,

I could not get flattenquery() to work acceptably. It succeeded in retrieving the desired parent records, but the display in the linked child table browse was blanked.

If you need the parent table records displayed in a browse on your form, I fear you'll have to do it the long way, by setting a flag in each record to be displayed, and then running a query to display the flagged records. -- tom

RE: Displaying only parent of specific child recor

I was about to give up trying to develop a new way to do this type of thing and get back to the tried and true when I decided to check the articles in the Learning Alpha Site. I noticed an Article on FAQs by Dr. Wayne. In that article was an piece about referencing a parent field from a child table using lookups in the field rule of the child.

Taking inspiration from that I think that I may be able to build something in the record events that would modify the value in the parent record whenever the flag field is modified. I havn't quite determined the method yet but I will report on my progress soon.
