Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bill:

The beta version from the very begining was vast improvement over the current system. Xdialog provides improvements that match and surpass the competition. The abundance of new commands for the programmer requires a whole new learning curve.

The non-programmer will be able to accomplish much more than they did in the past. I particualry enjoyed the ability to open another screen and provide the key access to the file the new screen would open.

I know more than one article will be needed to inform everyone about the giant leap the beta version has made.

There are so many new items that it is unbelievable. No one can say "Alpha are you listening" anymore when wishing for enhancements to their database product. I have never seen such a leap of development from one version to another in any software program I have ever used. One thing I noticed right away is much has been added to aid the programmer/developer. It seems that while you are exploring the program, the relative Genies are "at your service". I mean that they are not elementary nor obnoxious, but of ample strength and features. They make you appreciate their presence instead of quickly looking for a way to close them! Another thing that I quickly ran to try was the auto advance on a lookup field, you know when you start typing in the product id in a line items field, the popup list advances as you type :)

With just these comments, I have not even opened the door to the new improvements for you. It seemed that on every corner of looking around in the program I was "big eyed" with WOW look at what they have done here!

Super database and great job Alpha! I can hardly wait for the final code to buy.

Alpha has done an amazing thing with their new Version 5.0. They have increased the ease of use in many ways while also attending to some of the fundamental design improvements for the database. The result is a product that is more capable while also being easier to use. This is the reverse of the featuritis present when software only seems to have a new feature list and no fundamental improvements.

For beginning users who have a tough time working with indexes and filters, Version 5 shows you the calculations while you work. By providing many little services and genies like this all thrugh Alha Five, the program makes the learning and design process run much faster.
For lower level programming, version five adds such things as new variable definitions and ways to interact with users. Since more objects are now written in Xbasic, you now have more programming control over them as well. The script recorder is hugely productive and can show both new coders and old hands how to work with Xbasic.
With the ability to automatically send and retrieve email directly to the database, Version 5 will likely tickle the imaginations at many companies who are trying to manage remote data entry at small remote sites given modest budgets. Version 5 also prints in PDF and HTML formats so reports are much more mail and web portable than before.

Very simply this new update should not be called Alpha 5 Version 5. Each devlopment of Alpha has had a new number. Therefor I suggest this new edition be called Alpha 6 Version 1. I know ths is not very original but this is a new product and not just an update version. I often find that telling an existing customer about all the improvements made are well appreciated, but are totally lost on a new customer. They need to know how it will benifit them now as it stands not how it was. All you great experts out there can talk about the fantastic benifits (and there are plenty) what we also need are some words from some people who have not used Alpha before to get their reactions.

Three cheers to Alpha, for "Alpha 6"

I am currently updating two fairly complex programs, one is using Alpha 4 Version 3 and the other Alpha 5 Version 4.5. I am amazed at how rapidly I am progressing with these conversions. I used to labor over some of the xbasic scripts, not being a professional programmer, but now Version 5 does most of the work for me. I was also impressed by the quick responses I received from Alpha Software when I had problems. Some of the problems were real, others were due to my lack of knowledge.
