Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V5 beta-set form problems

I have attatched my files and maybe someone can tell me what Im doing wrong. My problem is that whenever I try to make a form I get warnings galore. I can do the exact same thing in v4.5 and it works fine.

Is it me or a bug?

    David,
Downloaded and unzipped your application. Was able to create 2 new forms without problems. I did notice that you've placed your tables on both your c and d drives. Could that be part of the problem?

I take that back. I tried to create a form on your invoice header set and my computer froze. The customer.dbf table was not included in your zip file so the form designer could not find it.

Sorry about that. I assure you it was a mistake in making the zip. Try this again.

          David,
I downloaded the newest zip and was able to create forms successfully for both of the sets in your application. I could not duplicate your problem. What version of the beta are you using?

It was late at night and I didnt describe my problem well. After making the form with the set and saving it whenever I opened it to add info then that is when I get the warnings. The browses are dim and will not allow me to enter info. Sorry I didnt describe it well.

The warnings indicate that you have a field on the form or in the browse that is no longer in the tables. I tried to make a new form based on the invoice header set and came up with the same result as you. However, I went into my app and created a form on a set without problem. This leads me to believe your tables or forms are corrupted. I would delete the form, compact the database and then recreate a simple form as a test. If the simple form works, then recreate your more complex forms. I don't think you've found a bug in A5V5 at this point.

                Ohlen,

This is one time I hope you're wrong. I really am hoping that v5 will not be prone to form corruption.

Ok, I tried it again and the same result. I even tried to let Alpha make a default form, save it, and then went into view. I still get the warnings.
When I came up with this to begin with I went ahead and make a brand new database and started from scratch. I made the tables simple and put the sets together. Every time when you try to view then it will not allow any data input into the broweses.

Try it! If Im wrong Im wrong.

                    Ken,
I can't duplicate the problem here. If you have time, would you give it a try. If this is a bug, Selwyn would want to know. On the other hand, it would be good to confirm it before reporting. I can duplicate the problem with Dave's database but not with mine.

I certainly appreciate the help from everyone. I know what I am seeing but I cant figure out why. Like I said before I can do the exact same thing in 4.5 but it works like a champ. I figured maybe something had changed. Of course that made no sense.

                        David,

I was able to duplicate your problem and have found the reason. When I opened the default form for the Customer Service Information set and saved it, when I opened the new form, I got the errors you mentioned.

The problem seems to be the spaces in the table names. I duplicated each table in the set to a new short name (10 characters) with no spaces and then created a new set with an identical structure to your existing set using the duplicated tables. I opened this set's default form and saved that. This new form opens without an error.

The next test was to duplicate the table home appliances with the name home_appliances, the table service information with the name service_information and edit the original set, replacing the names with a space with the names with an underline. Now when I saved the default form, the saved form again opened without error.

Last, I took the new edited original set, opened your existing form, deleted the browses, and put new browses on the form and saved it. The form now opens without an error.

Why you could get this to work in v4.5, I really don't know, but spaces in table names has always been a problem. I

Thanks for your response. I got an email from Richard and he explained that it was a bug on the list to be fixed. He also explained the exact same fix too. I was glad to know I wasnt wrong. That doesnt happen very often. I usually am wrong and need someone to correct it!!! Anyway, at least we know what it is and it will be fixed! Thanks for all the replys.
