Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

V5 will not work in Win 95

While testing my application in V5 beta I found a problem working the application on my win 95 work-stations. I advised Selwyn of the problem and he did reproduce it. Selwin now states that for several reasons V5, when released, will not be fixed to work in a win 95 machine. I have a mix of 95 98 and 2000 machines on my network and it will mean upgrading 15 machines to win 2000.
I am curious if this is just my problem or how many users it will effect.

We have a system in the mix that cannot be upgraded or replaced :-(

What's the problem? Do you have a small demo?

I'm not sure that I understand exactly how this problem effects V5 with regard to the Win 95 operating system. I do still run Win 95 on my home computer. And one of our computers at work still runs Win 95 for some basic shipping functions such as UPS's Worldship, label printing, etc.

I haven't even looked at the beta version of V5 but I'm anxiously awaiting the official release of V5.

        Gary,

I'm sure you know your stuff, but one word of caution. Don't upgrade underperforming machines with a newer OS. Years ago, I upgraded P-90's, P-75's from Win-95 to Win-98. After that they ran like a dog! Good luck.

Immediate problem that I found was that custom menus did not display the text of the menu unless that menu item has a sub menu below that, even then the text of the submenu items does not appear. However the actions of the the items do work just fine if you know the position of the item you want and mouse click in that area.
          Example: Item1 Item2 Item4 Item 6

Items 1,2,4 & 6 appear because they have sub menus under them. Items 3
& 5 do not appear because they do not have submenu below them. Let's say items 1,2,4 & 6 each have four choices below them.
You do see a defined area where the text of those choices should appear but you do not see the text/label. However if you click in one of those defined areas, the actions behind that choice are performed as expected.

I am not sure if there are more problems beyond that because I for the most part stopped my testing on my win 95 machines. My win 98 and 2000 machines do not have this problem

Thanks for caution Selwyn did advise that the published requirements for V5 will be 300mhz and 128 meg ram. I will need to do a survey of the win 95 machines to see exactly what I have and what investment will be necessary to switch.

Just for a little information. I have been running the A5V5 beta on two different computers with no real compatibility problems. One has Win98, a pentium II 300mhz processor and only 64 meg ram. It works the same as a second computer with WinME, 1.4 ghz processor and 640 meg of ram. The only difference is speed. The slower computer would not be acceptable to most users, but I wanted to explore the limits of the program.

sorry it is not just custom menus that act this way it is also the standard menu that you find above the A5 control panel

                  Jerry:

A quick question, if you will...

By "Not be acceptable to most users...", do you mean in data entry tabbing from field to field, or in running operations and scripts, or do you refer to other issues.

How does the same app compare in speed when running under the Beta and 4.5?

If I remember correctly, when 4.0 came out, a P133 with 32 MB was extremely slow tabbing from field to field. Adding more ram resolved the issue.

I think you get the drift of what I am asking. A ram upgrade is easy, but telling a company they need 15 new computers can be a hard sell!

I haven't had a current Beta in a few months, but I thought, at that time, that the Beta was OK in speed, short the fact that it hadn't been compiled yet and was in a debug state.

                  Thanks for any feedback,

                  Craig

                    Craig,

The term "unacceptable" is a relative term. The only real speed issue noticed by an end user with V5 is how fast forms initially open. Some users think if opening is not almost instantaneous, the program is too slow. The A5V5 beta is currently somewhat slower to open forms, particularly ones with custom menus and toolbars. If you don't use menus and toolbars, or use the system versions, the speed is similar to V4.5. Once a form is loaded and open, you can switch from one form to another with no real significant speed difference. Obviously, the beta is still being modified and optimized and this issue may change.

RE: V5 will not work in Win 95

I've been able to open A5v5 on a Win95 machine of 120 MHz with the aforementioned menu display problems and a longer loading time. I forsee no speed problems for me especially since this appears to be a Win95 problem. Much of my work at home is just editing databases and code, so its not data intensive and this speed will be fine. I have very little other software or fonts mounted on my system.

I'm not interested in the time spent on an offer cluttered PC upgrade, so guess I'll be looking for a CD of Win98 now!

Thanks for the info... I really liked what I saw in the Beta and look forward to it's enhancements.

David Not sure which beta build you are working but Selwyn did tell me he is taking the ability to load onto a win 95 machine out of V5 Guess I'll be looking to get 17 versions of Win 2000. V5 has too much good stuff to pass up
