Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Selwan, Peter, Finian, or any other top gun

    Hi All,

O.K. So with everything said and done about v5, and I agree it's Great, how would I get a total of a field in a one to many set into a areal field with v5.

For example: For each customer there are many charges and payments. On a form where the customer is the parent table and the charges and payments the child table, how can I get total charges, total payments, and a balance.

Until now I used calculated fields. You know the limitations with that. Barry Rochford disigned a script by which the result of a calculated field is moved into a regular field. But I thought that in v5 it will be able to be done through Field Rules. I am left scraching my head.

    Please helllppp.

I am reluctant to call on you guys, but I know that any answer I get from any of you will be accurate and reliable. Hey, you spoiled us.

You time and help, as always, is greatly appreciated.

You can try using posting rules from the child to the parent. This did not work reliably in v4, and the answer given was that posting was not meant to work within a set. I don't know if posting will work differently in v5. Otherwise, you have to use a script. It's not terribly difficult to work this out, and I give an example in Application Programming in Alpha Five version 5, which should be out real soon now.

After Bill Warner challenged me on the posting question, I tried using posting rules in v5 to post subtotals from child records to a parent, and they seem to work perfectly, at least in my testing. So maybe scripting isn't required, after all.

Did the "summary" setting in sets return to field rules in A5V5?

If so, I use this quite a bit in Alpha Four and it works great. Was hoping it would be added for V5, though I don't know if it was.

          Thanks, Peter,

I was afraid to rely on posting. I think I will wait until there is enough feed-back as to the reliability.

I am looking forward to your script. I am an avid reader of anything you write about Alpha that I can put my hands on.

          Thanks again,

            Hi mike,

Thanks for your interest. You hit the nail on the button. We were led to believe early on that v5 will bring back that luxury we enjoyed in Alpha4, but it seems it was dropped for some reason.

Could you believe that after all these version upgrades in Alpha 5 we still don't have this ability.

            Thanks again.

              Tovia:

              For all that it's worth......

I have a checkbook applicaton running for over 1500 records. It is a one record parent and the deposits and payments are, of course in the child. This is my personal app running for about 1 1/2 years. Each transaction posts via field rules to the respective parent field. It is quite P E R F E C T! I frequently go back in previous entries at reconciliation time; change amounts both pay and deposit. I has worked flawlessly keeping perfect math. For load speed reasons, I have another form with DBSUM function checks on those posted figures and they have been consistently Perfect every time I've checked them.

"Post" might be a misnomer. I feel those posted fields are being updated behind the scenes just as they would in a spreadsheet environment.

Give serious thought to that simple field rule solution - expecially after Pete Wayne's endorsement.

This is an A5 version of an A4 app set up in the same way with the same perfect results running over 8 years.

                Hi, Ken,

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your input. I certainly will give it a try.

                All the best.
