Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rule Event Problem

I have an embedded table on a form.

Field3 of the embedded table has a lookup field rule. If the user selects a lookup value for Field3, Field3 and Field4 of the table are filled in.

When the user moves to the next row of the embedded table, the default value for Field3 is the value of Field4 in the previous row of the table.

I've tried numerous method and can not get this to work reliably. I'm attempting to set a variable using the events tab on Field4.

    lastfield4 = alltrim(table->field4)

I've placed this code, one at a time, in both the OnEditField and OnWroteField with mixed results.

The result of OnEditField, the variable is set by the lookup value. If the user changes the value of the lookup in Field4, the variable keeps the original lookup value.

The OnWroteField, the variable is only set if the user types in data. Accepting the lookup value yields a blank variable.

    lastfield4 = " "

In both cases, the cursor passes through both Field3 and Field4, in my case while using the enter key.

    TIA

    RE: Field Rule Event Problem

    Ron,

    Have you tried

    previous(field4)

as the default expression for field3? (i.e. using the data entry tab of the field rules dialog, instead of the events tab).

      RE: Field Rule Event Problem

      Hi Tom,

The previous function only works if all data is entered sequentially.

I need a method that reads what is in Field4 after the cursor leaves Field4 and sets the variable LastField4. According to the manual, OnWrote Field should work, but it only works if the user types in text, not if the user accepts the default value.

      Is this a BUG?

I guess there needs to be a new event, ReadFieldAfterCursorLeavesField.

Does anybody have any ideas. Can I make a function that will do this?

      TIA

        RE: Field Rule Event Problem

        Ron,

when you said you wanted the value of Field3 to match the previous row's value of Field4, I assumed data entry would be sequential, and that you were talking about entering a new record on the new row. Guess I still don't understand what you need. Sorry.

How about posting a working model, with a roadmap (text file) explaining exactly how you want the browse object to behave during data entry?

          RE: Field Rule Event Problem

          Hi Tom,

Yes, the entries are squential in the table which is embedded in a form. As long as the new form entry and the embedded table is squential, everything is all right. However, if a new form entry is indexed prior to the last form entry in the current index, previous doesn;t work for the embedded table as previous is looking at the last entry of the table.

Anyways, I've come up with a fix.

Instead of trying to set the variable when exiting Field4, I'm now setting the variable using the event in Field5, CanEditField. I've set this up on a couple of different fields and in all my testing, this seems to be working perfectly.

          Thanks for your help,

              Ron,

Try this. When you operate with Xbasic, the changes are made under the screen so to speak of the form and the form is not changed. Perhaps for the field rule to work on your next record to work you may need to advance the table record pointer manually and/or resyncronise the form so both the table and form pointers are aligned.

No, the changes are on the form but what you see is not what you get with regards to setting the variables.

Anyways, as I posted earlier, I seem to have a good working solution for right now.

It seems that the straight forward and direct solution doesn't always work with computers. At times, the circular route achieves the desired results.

                Thanks again,
