Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need Help with A5 on Windows 2000 Pro

    Help!

I am a new user to Alpha 5 but familiar with databases ( Microsoft Access and SQL). I am having trouble with A5 crashing during debugging. I called A5's technical support line and was told to increase the files= statement in the Config.sys file to "files=150". I thought, O'K an easy fix. Then I thought, Windows 2000 Professional is based on NT. It doesn't have a Config.sys file. I've searched the hard drive and have not found one.

So I called back the Tech Support Number and shared my revelation. The same man told me that it did have a Config.sys file and if I needed help to contact Microsoft. I have left an e-mail on MS Support Site and am awaiting an answer.

Can anyone here shed some light on this issue? Maybe I'm just missing something obvious?

    Thanks

    Hmm..config.sys for a win32 program? I think not.
This is from my win2K machine:

    C:>dir /AH
Volume in drive C has no label.
    Volume Serial Number is 00BB-20F0

    Directory of C:

    08/30/2001 05:28p 0 AUTOEXEC.BAT
    01/01/1999 11:00p 195 boot.ini
    01/01/1999 09:45p 512 BOOTSECT.DOS
    08/30/2001 05:28p 0 CONFIG.SYS
    08/30/2001 05:28p 0 IO.SYS
    08/30/2001 05:28p 0 MSDOS.SYS
    08/30/2001 07:57p 34,468 NTDETECT.COM
    08/30/2001 07:57p 214,432 ntldr
    04/02/2002 02:29a 402,653,184 pagefile.sys
    08/31/2001 10:06p RECYCLER
    08/30/2001 05:38p System Volume Information
    9 File(s) 402,902,791 bytes
    2 Dir(s) 11,339,171,840 bytes free

Yah, config.sys is there, but obviously not used for much. Something as simple as an improperly placed backslash can cause A5 to crash during application development. I'd start stripping down your code to find the offending chunk, if any. That failing, you might have to compact or even recreate the database, perhaps from a backup. I always keep a backup of each day's changes so I can revert if I get into an unworkable state..and it does happen more than I'd like to admit.

But you could try their suggestion. I don't think you'd do any harm in trying.

      Tom,

Thanks for the reply. How did you get a DOS prompt?

          Chris,

The file is probably called something else in 2K as it is in NT (if I recall correctly). The syntax may also be different as it is for sure in ME.

You need someone experienced in 2K setup to tell you. After that it is the work of an instant.

In the unlikely event that no such person presents themself here by the end of the weekend I'll ask in the office Monday.

RE: Need Help with A5 on Windows 2000 Pro

I use Win 2000 Pro extensively and there is no intrinsic problem in using debugging under Win 2K Pro. Having said that, I have encountered situations where code will crash Alpha 5 so I think you need to isolate exactly what is causing the crash.

I've also encountered (as have others) situations where the A5V4 debugger simply doesn't fire in response to a debug(1) line in a script and it is necessary to launch the debugger before running the script in order to step through the code. Reinstalling A5 will generally fix this problem.

Why don't you clarify what is happening and when. I don't really see that manipulating the config.sys will do anything for you.
