Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Print - time per page

When printing reports, it takes up to 2-minutes to a print a page. This creates a HUGE problem when printing large reports.

What needs to be done to speed up the printing?

RE: Print - time per page

Svereal suggestions can be found using the search feature of the message board and entering "print speed".

Without knowing a single detail about the construction of your report, type of printer, whether you have any indexes defined which would aid Alpha in selecting the records for your report, etc., it's hard to offer any other help.

I've resolved the Print Time Issues

The cause of my reports printing so slowly was due to the GROUPS, ORDER and SUMMARY options I was using in my report.

I was printing a report from a single table, with only 200 records. 10 records per page (20 pages).

At 2-3 minutes per page it took nearly 1-hour to print the report.

When I removed the GROUPS and SUMMARY and only ordered on one field, the reported printed at the print speed of my printer.

I've reviewed the LONG list of postings relevant to slow printing. It's a shame that ALPHA has not addressed this in upgrades to the software.

When originally designing the reports, I was enthused to see that I could GROUP, ORDER and TOTAL my reports by so many fields. Now I can't.

      I now need to
run a query for the GROUP and ORDER
print the report based upon current records
and then repeat the run/print for each of the groups.
The reports is being run for 3-departmental GROUPS, each having 2 to 3 product GROUPS, each product GROUP having 4-5 employees.
I was ORDERING based upon target complete and then actual complete dates.

Rather than having one sectionalized report, I now need to print approx 10 individual reports.

This still takes less than 1/2 the time it would if I let the software run it's GROUP ORDER SUMMARY functions.

You should be able to speed things up by creating indexes on the fields that you want to use for group and order.

        I would suggest indexing on

department, product, employee, target complete date, and actual complete date

then try your grouped and ordered report.

          Hi Damian,

There are many aspects of running a report that can slow it down. If you don't use running summary variables, this will increase time significantly. If you have different grouping orders and filters that are different from the index/query order of the table being used, again, this creates delays. There are many more that cause slowdowns, but careful design will eliminate all of these.

Sometimes, copying needed records to a temporary table that you can work with exclusively is the proper method.

The problem is almost sure to be 99% the way you've done things. Change/correct your methods and speed will increase significantly.

In some cases Network printers are configured wrong as well.

            Damian,

One of the nice features of this board is that it permits one to upload an entire database (subject to a 1 MB limit), so that others can download it and develop suggestions for you.

If you were to do this, and if you were to include written specifications for the report you're trying to produce, I'd be very surprised if a faster approach were not feasible.

              Thank You.

Yes. I am running more than one report from the one table.
The report that runs the same as the indexes does print faster, but still slower than when I removed the GROUP ORDER SUMMARY.

I've never had a problem with the report running and viewing on my screen, but only when I send it to the printer.

I think the postings which suggest creating a dummy table may work the best for me.
