Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Absolutly Byeond Measure!!!

This conference exceeded my expectations!! Ira did a teriffic job. Once again, Ira, Thank You Very, Very Much!!!!

V5???? To anyone who willingly jumps ship to Access or any other database, examining you head will be of no use. A complete waste of money. As I witnessed Selwyn's demonstrations, I was amazed beyond belief how powerful v5 is and yet how easy it will be. V4.5 is not in the same league with v5. Just no way. Whatever the cost, it will be reasonable, if not cheap.

I heard one developer say that when v5 comes out, it will take away some of his business from other A5 users. He wasn't complaining but simply making a statement about the power and ease of use.

There is NO excuse for any A4v6 or v7 programers to hang around DOS after v5's release. If you thought A4 was easy to use and powerful, it will NOT in any way, shape or form, compare to v5. If we had another 3 day conference only on V5, there would not be enough time to cover everything adequately.

June is the release month but if it went longer for beta testing and bug removal, I'd still wait, holding my breath. There is simply nothing to compare it to. So, between now and June, "Standby to Standby"

The web and server features will be about a year later and when that hits, "batten down the hatches" and fasten your seat belt.

    RE: Nothing but superlatives

I have read several threads on the conference and I have rarely seen so many superlatives. I have to admit that I wondered whether Alpha Software could pull this off but, from what I have been reading, they have done a super job (another superlative). Thanks to all the conference attendees for the great reports.

I'm pretty confident that the program will be out in June. I don't think Selwyn would announce this date unless he was sure that all remaining problems are minor. Can't wait till June. Kudos to the Version 5 developement team.

      Hi Ken,

You're Welcome! Thanks for coming (and everyone else too!)

I heard one developer say that when v5 comes out, it will take away some of his business from other A5 users. He wasn't complaining but simply making a statement about the power and ease of use.

You may have heard me say that I HATE Alpha 5 Version 5. :?)

It's so easy, any end-user will be able to do what previously took me weeks to accomplish.

Guess I'll have to switch to Access where only programmers need apply --- Just Kidding!!!

The only problem now in Alpha 5 Version 5 is not whether it can do something,
but where do I find the feature in it's incredibly rich language?

And as for DOS (and Alpha 4), looks like Alpha Software has just put another nail in that coffin for DOS!!

        Hi Ira,

No, it wasn't you so now that makes two. Now, many of us will have an opportunity to "play in the same ball park with the big boys".

Boy, oh boy. Is this ever going to be fun!!

          Kenn,

Just a question, does V5 have a decent instruction book, or will it be just the V4.5 system of on-line/cd info.

          Brian.

            RE: Absolutly Byeond Measure!!!

Accoring to Selwyn the documentation will be on CD, will be available from a separate publisher in book form and will be on the web as dynamic help -- in other words it will be continually updated as more info comes in to put into it. This will be available under help on the main menu, so no need to exit the app for help. If you have broadband this will be great, each topic will be printable and I think there will be the ability to download a .doc or .pdf file if you want to print the whole thing. In addition there will be F1 help that will be specific to what you are doing.
I have also heard rumors that there will be on line tutorials!

It seems that they are covering all the bases after the complaints about the V4 documentation.

I have a feeling that whatever they have, you will be happy with it.
Obviously, all of us that have seen what is in V5 have been very impressed. The app is just amazing and is structured to make it more amazing as it develops. Additions to functionality will not require a new release of the app as most of it is written in Xbasic, just add the add ons and go, no reinstall required.

              Brian,

Not only will it be improved as Russ stated, but when you click 'Help' from the menu, you'll be given the choice to go directly to the message board.

Selwyn said something like, A4 is so easy to use that in my mind the windows version should be just as easy if not easier. It WILL be!!

                Russ,

Thanks for the info. Ill be moving up to V5, if it doesnt mean redoing everything already done in V4.5.

As I understand frm your info the documentation will be similar to V4.5, (not like the A4 V6 book, as I had hoped):-
                In V4.5 the documentation:-
                -Is on CD:
-Is available frm separate publishers; eg the excellent, but thin with many typos, X Basic for Everyone:
-Available on the web, continuously updated, as per the excellent message board.
                -There are on-line tutorials.

                In A4 V2, 3, 4, 5, 6, there was a decent instruction book.

In A5 V4.5 Alpha help does not support Xbasic questions. Even though, it seems to me, A5 has a lot to do with Xbasic.

Maybe I have missed something, but where will be the documentation improvement?

                  RE: Absolutly Byeond Measure!!!

Selwyn also said that all the documentation will not be finished by the release date. So expect somewhat incomplete documentation on the first go-around. But as Russ & Ken said, the docs will be continually updated.
