Default Embedded Browse column title print problem

I have a form within a set, in which I have an embedded browse. I wish to not print the column titles, so that I can make my own column titles in a text box above the browse because I want a better appearing spacing for the titles. However, even though I select no column titles and it shows with none in edit mode and in data entry mode, it decides to print the titles anyway when I go to print preview or print the form. Is this a glitch or what am I doing wrong?

You can go into the form browse and edit the column titles directly.

Just be sure that you are not using the column .active() method in code attached to the form as this would change the value returned by the code.

As a general rule, printing in Alpha is done from reports, in this case one which would mimic your form setup. It's more work but it gives you far grater control over the end product.

I guess I do not understand your answer as sufficient. When I edit the browse properties under browse appearance and do not check the column titles to be active, they do not appear in the design or view modes, but they print anyway. Also, no matter what I set the title fonts to be in browse properties, they always print the same font and font size and as bold, even though they show as I set them in design mode and in view mode. Per your assertion that a report is a better format, a form seems to me to be my most logical way to design and utilize an invoice with an embedded browse for invoiced items, which is a prime example shown and explained in the Alpha Five Users Guide that I have from version 1. Entering invoice records via a report does not strike me as practical unless I am missing something here. I have been printing invoices using a form format very flawlessly for several years from Version 1. The problem I have now arises from a different application I am compiling from Version 4.5. Thanks for your answer and please correct me if I am not seeing the obvious or something. Thanks.

    Richard,

Permit me to jump into this thread.

Though I don't have Version 1 experience, I and others have found the 'form' print capabilities of Version 4.5 to be rudimentary and in some cases incomplete. For me, it's useful for a quick screen print during development, so I can show the customer approximately what it will look like. But not much beyond that.

On the other hand the Report engine in Version 4.5 is robust, and provides much, much greater control over the appearance and content of the finished report. After using the product heavily the last couple of years it's pretty clear that the designers must have done it this way on purpose.

I think you'll get better results using a report than trying to print the form, even though this sounds like it will be different than what you may be accustomed to.

This is clearly a bug in form printing which Tom has fairly described as rudimentary.

The logic that form printing is the appropriate way to print an invoice might be true with another tool but is not the case with A5.

Thanks for the information. As long as I know the limitations, I can live with them. I think I still prefer to use the form format to print, as it is my vehicle for data entry, and printing from it is a much easier one step procedure for me rather than going to a report mode. I am using the program actually as a point of sale program, and my invoice form really is the basic vehicle of data entry, which can be printed on the spot. Then from this data, various reports, labels, letters, etc. can be generated later. Here again, I do not at all consider myself advanced or in the loop of how to do things, but I am quite happy with the way the form prints, perhaps with a few minor glitches, but none hinders it from a reasonable result. Thanks for your information. I have not used this forum much up until now, but I can see that it can be very informative. Thanks.

Thanks for your information. To print an invoice as a report, am I correct to assume I would enter an invoice in a "form" on screen, then go to a "report" that would be customized to print my invoice? As a novice at this, this seems to be a bit tortured way to do it, but I admit I am not a programmer. Actually the glitch I asked about is more of an irritant than a roadblock to printing my form. Overall, I am fairly happy with the form printing, and since it is the basic vehicle for data entry, printing it is a quick one step process. I then have a collection of reports, letters, labels, etc. that I've generated from the data entered via the invoice. I am basicly using the program as a point of sale program and am quite happy with it. Thanks for your information. I can see that this forum is quite helpful, as I have begun to use it a little just lately.

Thanks again for the info. After rereading my previous answer to you, I think I perhaps should apologize for sounding like I'm more informed on this than I am, and you experts out there probably find me irritating. After investigating and thinking about this some more concerning reports printing better, I think I now see how it can be done smoothly, perhaps with the use of buttons, etc. There are some aspects of the program that I haven't even attempted to figure out yet. At any rate, I am finding it fun and fascinating to learn different techniques and approaches to customizing what I want the program to do. Thanks again for your input.
