Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: the user delete my progam in the network

    Nehru,

The runtime engine is designed so that a user can operate an Alpha Five database, edit records, run queries, run reports, and so on. It does not support user edits to the underlying table structures, index definitions, and report or form layouts, and cannot be used to create a database or application. It just 'runs' an application created elsewhere with the full version of Alpha Five.

The runtime engine will not prevent someone from using other programs (like Windows Explorer) to find and delete your database files.

Alpha Five stores its data in standard DBF formatted files (Foxpro 2.6, I believe). To be useful the data files must be editable. (read/write access enabled) This means that they will be vulnerable if someone on the network decides to delete them.

It's possible to encrypt the data, and it's possible to store the data tables in unlikely places on your server, but neither of these steps will protect your data files from a determined or thoughtless user.

Maintaining a good backup system is your best option.

Terminating employees who delete the database files is also an option. (Figuring out who did it can be difficult...)

RE: the user delete my progam in the network

This is a network administration problem and has nothing to do with Alpha5. I believe other products would raise the same issues. Encryption is irrelevant if the files can still be deleted.

I really cannot overpraise Novell in this area. It allows micromanagement of user rights on a file or folder-specific basis. Hence, my users can read, write, edit, but not delete files in my application's folder on the server. Others who access the same server but are not users of the application don't even see the folder in Windows Explorer.

I'm no expert here, just a user of network services. See your network administrator for guidance.

RE: the user delete my progam in the network

        GOOD BACKUP IS A MUST.

We have a huge network with over 250 users. There is nothing set to stop a user from removing our databases. One suggesation would be to create a hidden folder and use full path names in everything you do. Hidden folders are not visible to the casual user in windows explorer. This is much easier said than done.

It is definitely NOT an Alpha issue, but a networking issue.

        Good luck,

        Tom Henkel

If you are really paranoid, one neat solution that was suggested to me is backup the whole app directory into a single zip file, rename the file with an odd name and a .dll extension and save it in the windows/system directory. Most people don't have enough guts to touch an unknown dll file
