Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

viewing child records w/ an alternatew form

I am having a bit of a problem fetching through records within a set. I have a set which links consist of a master parent databse of patient names. I have a treatment notes database which is linked to this parent database through their patient number . I also have a movie database which is linked via the patient number.

In version 1.02 I was able to do a card popup command & view child records through an alternate form within the set(card_popup("form_viewer", "USE=~MOVIE~ FETCH_STATE"). This would bring me to the correct patient which I was viewing with an alternate form within the set.

Using this similar command in version 4 , the new form will open but no child records are displayed. In fact it sees no child records at all. Any suggestions?

Below is the structure of the set

Lou database is the master databse

The Dictation db is linked as follows: //Parent linking fied =str(number)//Child Linking field=STR( PATNUM )+INVERT( CDATE( DATE ) )

The Movie db is linked as follows: //Parent linking field= number// Cjild Linking field = number

    Lou,

Not sure I understand what is is you're attempting to do but I'll take a try at it.

I think you want to call up a form to show records pertinent to the patient. If that's the case, I can think of a couple of ways to do it, 1) use a tabbed suboform or 2) a button to show another form. That button can be created with the button genie to show only precords in bioth tables that match the patient_id number.

I don't understand why you need a link expression as the patient_id number ought to work.

      Lou,

Tell us about the form you are trying to display. Was it based on the same set, or just one of the tables in your database?

Give us the details on the 'similar command' you use to open the form. Show us the specifics.

I attempted using the button genie to open the new form.I selcted only those records that match the patient number. I get the following error as depicted in the enclosed file. I also enclosed the script which is attached to the button in version 1.02 which works just fine.

          Lou,

I believe there is some differences in the Xbasic between v1.02 an v4. I tried to open the attached file but nothing showed in Acrobat Reader.

What did the error message say?

The error message is "expected error".

We really need to know more specifics.

                Lou,

I finally got around to opening the PDF you attached to an earlier message. I'm not familiar enough with vers. 1 scripting commands to explain what you're seeing. However, I can send you an easy example of how to do it using vers. 4 syntax. Standby.

                  Lou,

Here's an easy way to do it with Vers. 4 syntax.

This approach embeds a filter in the properties of the called form. The filter relies upon a variable, which is passed to the form when the form is opened.

I want to thank you in advance for your help. I tried using the parameters of the zip file you downloaded but unfortunately it did not work.It said it could not find the parent form number. I enclosed a zip file of my database & possibly you can offer an explanation.
If you open the daily form & attempt to click on the button on the form called movie, you will see that it does not go to the particular patient number but defaults to the first record number.I tried it using a form attached to the set and a separate form which is not attached to the set.

                      Lou,

I had trouble with your forms.

You have two named exactly the same. That's bad business and will cause Alpha Five confusion without exception.

Some of your forms were stored using an older format.

Your Daily form contains a series of actions using older xbasic syntax, with which I'm not familiar.

So, rather than try to 'fix' your forms, I struck out on my own.

I created a new form based on the Dict1 set and called it Test1.

I then created a new form based on the Movie table and called it Movie2.

Buttons are now in place on Test1 to open Movie2. One enables edits of all Movie records. The other limits the view to those which are linked to the Lou table, through the Number field.

Study the Variables defined in both forms.

Study the properties of the Movie2 form, especially the filtering expression.

Study the OnPush event scripts for the two buttons on Test1.

                      Have fun!
