Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

No Input Focus on Opening Screen

I have developed an application starts and initiallizes, but it does not have the imput focus when it starts. I mean that Windows does not highlight it for activitiy. If you mouse click on it and give it focus, then it runs fine. I have developed other applications, but this is the first time I have seen this behaviour. Any ideas? It is a nuisance to have to click on it with the mouse.

Using Windows 98SE that's how my opening forms behave too.

This has been discussed a number of times, you might try searching for related threads.

Some have suggested using sys_send_keys() in the autoexec script, or in the Init script of the opening form, in order to achieve the equivalent of a mouse click. If I remember correctly, some had success sending an Escape key.

In my own work, I left it 'unfocused', and my end users have never complained.

It is not a 98 vs 95 vs whatever issue. There actually is a registry setting to control this behavior.

I was going to manipulate this setting to manage the issue using until I read that it was designed to prevent certain viruses from sneaking into a system. So, like Tom, I decided to leave our networked machines as is. On a home system one can do as one wishes. The details are on this board if you search for them.

        Bill,

I'd be very interested to know where in the registry this is. I found that using Win95, my opening screen would have focus most of the time, but with Win98, it would never have focus.

In my case, I had a ui_get_password prompt appear first. To give it focus (my customer DID complain about it), I put

        sys_send_keys("{esc}")

BEFORE the line that calls the password prompt. Works like a charm.

          Bill,

I use the same approach, but it only works on the server or a standalone system. It does not work consistently on terminals with either Win98 or WinME. Sometimes it do and sometimes it don't. I finally just told the user to click on the password dialog box for focus. That always works.

I can't remember the registry key. I'll run a search tomorrow and see if I can find the thread but you should try too in case I can't locate the reference.

The problem I had with sys_send_keys was that (depending on the registry) it either was or was not necessary and when not necessary it messed something up, I can't remember what.

What put me on to the issue was that Alpha, and any application written in it, started differently on my home machine and at work. Made me crazy for a while.

            Best to all,

If I get the HTML right, this should take you to the thread:

              Window focus

If not, search on Registry Focus. The discussion is in a thread called "Little Thing".
