Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Help, I'm going mad (JOIN) operation

Help! I'm going mad here. Been trying to get a "Join" operation to work.
All I get in the output file is the values from
Missing310->Type_code and Missing310->C_Number along with the fields from "Cessnas" but they are always blank!!
I even tried posting "Cessnas" against the output file but that always posted none!
    what am I doing wrong??

    File--Missing310--

    Type_Code Char 12
    C_Number Char 20

    File--Cessnas--

    Type_Code Char 12
    C_Number Char 20
    Notes Char 24
    Sub Char 8
    C1 Char 1
    C2 Char 2
    Status Char 1
    Country Char 12
    Identity Char 12
    W_O_Date Char 12
    Old_Id Char 40
    Soc_Date Char 12

Joined File named "Add310" should contain all fields from "Missing310" and "Cessnas"

    TIA

RE: Help, I'm going mad (JOIN) operation

    Hi Graham
Little confused on what you are trying to accomplish using the Join function. The 2 tables have to have a least 1 field to link on to make the new record containing the fields from both tables. Since you have the same 2 fields in both master and transaction tables, it seems to me using the Join to make Add310, in what I assume you are trying to do, would be a duplicate of Cessnas.

Now, if there are records in Missing310 (the data in the 2 fields) that you want in Cessnas without re-entering them in, you would use the Append function.

RE: Help, I'm going mad (JOIN) operation

      Graham,

You might want to review tbl.join() in the xbasic ref. manual. Your description of the output file suggests that the secondary table doesn't contain any matching records. Perhaps a 'join' isn't really what you need.

While I don't have a great deal of experience with 'join', it's my understanding that the 'structure' of the resulting output table will contain fields from both primary and secondary tables. All the primary table records will be present. However, secondary table values will appear only if the secondary record matches a record in the primary table, using your linking key. As you can see, the number of records in the output table matches the number of records in the primary table, but the output table's structure is different. The effect is to create a new table that has a new field structure, consisting of all fields from both tables. Values from both tables will appear in the same record only if they 'match' link field values. If there are no matching link field values in the secondary table you wind up with a new output file that contains all the primary table info but none of the secondary, which is what you describe.

This is quite different from an 'append'. In an append the primary (master) table receives copies of records from the secondary (transaction) table. The number of records in the master table increases, but its structure does not change.
