Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    No printer selected

    Hi Phorum,

Recently a customer complained to me that when she prints a form and in
turn faxes it, that the received fax is hard to discern the difference
between 3,5,6 and 8. She faxed me a copy and I agree in part with her.
SOOOOOOO .... I started trying different fonts and then faxing them.

After a while I knew what to look for in the numerals. I picked
garamond because it was simpler in form with less curly-ques. When I
changed the report to use garamond, I got "printer not selected". I
found that the default printer was no longer selected in report
properties/printer. I reset it to default and tried to print again,
but got the same message. Several iterations of this produced the same results. I checked fonts in control panel and garamond is in there with samples.

    My questions are these:

    1. Why would printer selection change because I change a font?

    2. Has anyone else had a case where numerals were not clearly defined
after the report was faxed? If so, what font style did you use?

    Appreciate any input,
    efs

    Hi Ed,4

    >>1. Why would printer selection change because I change a font?

Sometimes stuff like this happens. Reselect and resave.

    >>2. Has anyone else had a case where numerals were not clearly defined after the report was faxed? If so, what font style did you use?

I have a general comment on the legibility issue. The term for those "curlycues" is Serif. In print, serif typefaces are in general *more* rather than less legible. On the screen, it is best to use a sans serif font (no serifs)because the pixelation of the screen does not render the serifs (and any other small-scale curves) particularly well.

Garamond is a serif font but the serifs are rather restrained so you might want to try a font with more prominent serifs.

In reproducing a document you reduce the resolution. Hence,
    -keep the serifs; and,
-increase the font size by a point or two.

        Hi William,

I've been called a lot of things, but this is the first for ,4. I have
already increased the font size to 11, lengthy fields prohibit me from
going larger. I've been aware of serif, I just like to call them curly
-ques, it's like getting in touch with my feminine side.

          RE: No printer selected

No printer selected is a big problem with reports in my books - especially when developing on different machines and then installing. A right pain when the margin cuts off lines etc.

The usual problem with fonts and printers is that the font is not available for that particular "printer".

Have you tried the Lucinda or Tahoma font? I have converted a number of docs recently to Tahoma as it's easy on the eyes.

            Hi Peter,

I haven't tried tahoma, but I will give it a try. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Try making the printer you want to use for the report the default Windows printer before you launch A5. Then, in the report properties, specify this printer. Do not use the "Use Default Printer" choice. You can then set "Show printer setup on print" to test printing on other printers.

Once the report is the way you want it, you can select "Use Default Printer" and (if needed) de-select "Show printer setup on print" and see if everything works.

              This sometimes works for me.

                HI Charles,

I usually do as you suggest with ehr exception of deselecting "use
default printer" and testing the report, then going back tand
reselecting it. I'll be sure to remember that the next time it comes
up. I believe it has more than a reasonable shot at solving the
                problem.

Thank you for your interest and input,
