Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ctrl-shift-f and ctrl-shift-r

    Hi,

    Do Ctrl-Shift-F and Ctrl-Shift-R only duplicate information from the last entered record? I am used to Alt-F and Alt-R in Alpha 4, which seemingly worked differently. In Alpha 4, if you selected any record and were viewing it and then entered a new record, using Alt-F and Alt-R copied the information from the record you were just viewing.

    I am converting my application from A4 to A5 and it seems that Ctrl-Shift-F and Ctrl-Shift-R do not do the same thing. It doesn't matter what record I am currently viewing, if I try to enter a new record using Ctrl-Shift-R and Ctrl-Shift-F, information is only copied from the last entered record.

    Am I missing something? Does the currently selected index make a difference? Is there any way to make these functions behave as Alt-F and Alt-R in A4?

    RE: ctrl-shift-f and ctrl-shift-r

    Hi again - (I should have searched the forum first!)

    I searched the forum and found an answer (although not a solution) to this. Hopefully, A5 ver.5 will fix this so that the previous record is copied instead of the last entered record. I really, really,really want this feature.

      Robin,

      Not having used earlier version of Alpha, I'm not sure if this is close enough. The following code, attached to the onpush event of a button on a form, will create a duplicate of the record being viewed.

      ''XBasic
      tbl = table.current()
      DIM record_data as B
      DIM qty as N
      record_data = tbl.record_data_get()
      tbl.enter_begin()
      tbl.record_data_set(record_data)
      tbl.enter_end(.t.)

      It does not "goto" that record once it is created. Will work on that aspect if you like.

        Not all that difficult.

        ''XBasic
        tbl = table.current()
        DIM record_data as B
        DIM qty as N
        record_data = tbl.record_data_get()
        tbl.enter_begin()
        tbl.record_data_set(record_data)
        tbl.enter_end(.t.)
        idx1 = tbl.index_primary_get()
        tbl.index_primary_put()
        tbl.fetch_last()
        parentform.resynch()
        tbl.index_primary_put(idx1)
        There can be only one.

          RE: ctrl-shift-f and ctrl-shift-r

          Stan,

          Thank you so much for your help in duplicating the Ctrl-Shift-R function. It will come in handy.

          More frequently, though, I only want to copy a few specified fields (always the same fields) from a record and not the whole record. This is what I decided to do. I created ersatz Copy and Paste buttons on my form. They don't really copy and paste from the clipboard, but rather, the Copy button copies the contents of the specified fields to global variables, which can then be copied to the new record using the Paste button. The only thing is that the user has to remember to use the Copy button while viewing the first record, before beginning to enter the second record.

          I still can't come up with any way to copy a field from the previous record while entering the new record. I tried using the Button Genie to write an Action Script as follows: I chose the custom action to be Value Set. The Object was the field I was trying to fill and I wrote the following expression to fill it with:

          ' field name (Object) is Sig
          previous("Sig")

          At any rate, it doesn't work (either with or without the quotation marks). The Expression Genie tells me the syntax is as follows:
          previous(c fieldname[,c tagname])

          Can you explain what the part in brackets means or if it has any relation to why my expression won't work? Am I on the right track or is there no way possible at present to copy the field from the previous record to the current record?

          Thank you again for all your help!

            RE: ctrl-shift-f and ctrl-shift-r

            Just to be sure we're on the same "page" so to speak, the previous() function works on table field names, not on form objects. If your table field name is "sig" then previous("sig") should return the value of the previous sig field.

            The previous() function as explained does not offer the [,c tagname] option. I don't know whether the option no longer works or the documentation is, once again, incomplete. I would surmise that the option is/was meant to let the function use index tags other than the currently selected to determine what the order of records is for selecting the previous value.

            Previous("sig","name") should return the previous value in the table field named sig when the table is sorted in "name" order (assuming there is an index built on some other field with at tagname of "name").

            If you want to be able to paste in certain field values whenever the user creates a new record you might consider taking your button code that captures the values and placing it on one of the form events, possibly onfetch. This would make the values always available .
