Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sending control codes to printer

I'm looking for a way of sending control codes to a printer on COM1 in order to open a cash drawer connected to this printer.

I have tried the "sendstr.exe" I found on Dr. Waynes "Learning Alpha" board, but this crashes with a runtime error (200) as soon as I call it.

    Does anyone have something similar?

Thanks in advance for your efforts.

RE: Sending control codes to printer

    Hello John,

I wrote the sendstr.exe utility. Is was written in 16 bit code and needs updated to 32 bit to run under newer OS. What OS are you using. It should work on OS's up to win98. I did re-write it using what I thought at the time was a neat new language, but I don't like it.

RE: Sending control codes to printer

      Hello Jim,

I'm running under Windows 98. I get the error message:

      "Runtime error 200 at 005c:0091".

Any help would be appreciated, since I cannot open the cash drawer in any other way.

      Thanks,

      John

RE: Sending control codes to printer

        Hello John,

I sent you a personal reply. Did you get it? Error code 200 is the divide by zero error code. This is I feel sure, not what is going on. I also get this running in newer all 32 bit systems, but I've never had a problem with win98.

Have you made sure the the com port is correct and the cash drawer is on? How about a printer. Sent a control code to a printer and see what happens.

        Good luck,
        Jim

          To John and All,

I made a few syntax changes and recompiled my old 16 bit sendstr.exe utility in 32 bit code. Be forwarned, I spent approx. 5 minutes on this. I tested it on a win2000 box with a printer on lpt1 and it appear to work....... but no guarentees :=)

Let me know how it works, hopefully it will.

            Hello Jim,

            IT WORKS !!!

Thank you very much for your help. The new 32-bit version works like a dream.

(Actually, I first thought that it didn't, but then I discovered that the printer wants a CRLF after the
control characters before it does its thing.)

            Thank you again.

            John
