Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I know there is some data in ddd when you convert it to dbf. I wish to know where the layout(like a form or report) would be and if it can be modified?

    Anybody know?

A small amount of knowledge can be grown and would be much appreciated.

      RE: ddd,ddm,ddx

I think Tony Rutherford posted earlier:

"1. Copy the table's .ddd , .ddm and .ddx files to another folder
      2. Change the file extensions: change .ddd to .dbf, .ddm to .fpt, .ddx to .mdx.
      3. Create a new database and add the new table to it.
      4. Open the default browse. "

The .dbf thus created should have the all the available information.

        Thanks Stan

I already been there from your earlier post. How about a set?

Just guessing, but I would try:

          2. Change the file extensions: change .set to .dbf, .sem to .fpt, .sex to .mdx.

            Stan:

Would you expect a .ddm to be almost 100Meg in size ?
I just recently noticed that one of my .ddm files was that size. I'm concerned my IT dept. is gonna come down on me for "hogging". All of my other .ddm's don't even approach
            1Meg let alone 100.
I might try what you suggested above to look at the file and see what's up.

              RE: ddd,ddm,ddx

Does seem excessive. Since the .ddm is holding field rules, etc it can get rather large. My largest is 8.5 meg.

              Done a database compact recently?

                joe:

i don't want to sound alarmist here, however the bloat that you are seeing is definately not a good thing. i've had to rebuild huge amounts of data when this has happened. backup immediately, run database compact and check the size of the file. if you can't get the bloat down you may have to move your data to some temporary tables, empty the original tables and then compact. from past experience compacting several times a day while developing is the only way to avoid this condition.

                  hi again:

just out of curiosity have you re-structured the table by inserting a new field between two others (ie not adding it at the bottom of the list) or deleted a field in the middle somewhere? i recall this as being a source of trouble.

                  regards,
                  ed

                    RE: ddd,ddm,ddx

I haven't changed the file structure in the past year, that I know of, however I know I haven't compacted in a while. I will give that a try. One other thing. My .dbf file gets "read" every day by another department's Access application. Will look into that also.

Thanks for the replies. Help staying on track is always appreciated.

                      Ed;

Okay. Here's what I have now.
                      1. I have indeed "compacted" the dbf, if compacted = PACK. A5 said it was done succesfully. (This was before the holidays.)

2.I changed the .ddd, .ddm and .ddx files per the instructions above. Upon opening the dbf I found it had 151 records with 456 removed. There were fields named NAME, TYPE, CONTENTS_C, CONTENT_M and VENDOR. The CONTENTS_M and VENDOR fields were memo types the others were character. I recognized the information in the first four fields but the VENDOR field has random entries of "off the wall" ASCII.
The entries in the NAME field were all very familiar with the exception of three. One was INVINCIBLE and in the TYPE field the entry was XDFN. Another was VENGEANCE with the same TYPE entry. The third was CUHSEOAFFTS and the TYPE entry for it was DBAX.

It looks to me that the field named VENDOR is not supposed to be there.

                      Any thoughts ?

                        Joseph,

Compacting the database is somewhat different than packing although I believe what happens is that Alpha "packs" its internal tables.

After first starting your database, close all forms leaving only the control panel visible, then choose the "File" menu in the top left, and "Database Compact" should be a choice just above the numbered list of recently accessed files.

If you go through the steps you mentioned, again, after performing this process, I believe you will find that the
"456 removed" will be gone, like packed deleted records.
                        There can be only one.
