Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Another Lookup Oddity

Another funny has surfaced in my Application. After clicking on a lookup table and added a new entry, the system writes everything to the correct places on the parentform. On entering the next record all the field rules "disappear" from that record. The only way I can get them back is to close A5v4.0 and restart. Any suggestion as to where to look for the problem. This is a standard A5 lookup with no fancy bits of code attached.

    TIA

    RE: Another Lookup Oddity

    Gramham,

Do you mean all the data disappears or the actual field rule itself disappears and the reappears?

I am finding the the lookup to a table using the field rules is a bit unstable. Wierd things happen. I finally got mine to show the Entry form only to, a few moments later, see error messages when clicking the Enter or Change buttons on the lookup bar or clicking a Save and/or Close button on the entry form. At least after clicking the Change button and clicking Close to the error message, the Entry form did open.

Then, after a few times of this, all the buttons began workding as they should. Not a single problem. HOWEVER, now the close button I created on the Entry form with the Genie, gives the same error message, "Arguement is incorrect data type". But, clicking Close on the error message does close out the Entry form and the record is saved. The closed button written with Xbasic is still working properly.

There are others as well who have had this or problems and attributed to either code or am embedded browse. In my case, once I deleted the embedded browse on the Entry form, I was able to finally activate the Entry form using the field rules lookup table rule.

This may not be much help to you but you're not alone on this one.

I think this one was an own goal! I checked and re-checked my coding and found that a browse.refresh() was pointing at the wrong object!!

I just figured out what "own goal" means. I usually require my wife's aid to translate from English to Amer'can.

            Ed,

I figure we just don't speak the Queen's English.

Did "Wrong way Corrigan" fly the wrong way in an airplane race, or was it some other event? And while we're at it, what is it called when you score a goal against yourself in North American football?

You can see what a serious sports fan I must be.

            Regards back,

              hi bill:

don't know much about football. hockey is too violent ... sometimes there is a fight that results in a face off .. sounds pretty barbaric to me.

in a smoky local tavern, using the facilities, a gent with large shoes and a small hat whacked me on the back and said "how 'bout them jays eh?" ... had to ask my buddy pete who replied that he thought they had just won the world serious.
