Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Arbitrarily deleted data AGAIN!!

    Hi Peter,
I've done what you suggested and now will simply wait. If the problem never occurres again, then it's fixed. There's no way for me to tell, actually, except by waiting to see. Thanks for your input, again. Thanks to everyone for their input.
    Sincerely,
    Wanda

Are you missing any whole records. I had this at one point and thought it a terrorist plot. After I rebuilt all the indexes there they were. But for the life of me I could not find them prior to the rebuilding indexes.

No, Bruce - but thanks for responding. It's just one field that occassionally loses its data, but only in some records of which I can not find anything in common. This is the 2nd time in about a half a year...I am now in a holding pattern - holding my breath for the next six months to see if it happens again. I followed the advice of Peter Gurlich...in this thread.

        Thanks, again!

Sometimes my niece calls me Perer, just to bust my aggies. If my name isn't mispelled at least once a day by someone, I don't feel right.

I have a niece who says, "Patience is a Virgil!"

Once, way back in the old days, I was a typist for a firm and had to type in the investigators name on the pre-printed business cards. His name was Bennet Arnburger. My fingers, after 150 or so cards, decided to get dyslexia and typed Arnett Binburger. I left that card in the middle of the stack :) I'll never know the outcome!

                have a great weekend, Retep!

                  Hi Wanda,

**There are at least 50 tables in the directory, set up in different control panels. **

What do you mean by: 'set up in different control panels'? Since each databse has only one control panel, is this a terminology misque or are you working between different databases?

Is it possible that some of the tables are not actually stored within the same database. When creating a table, especially the first ones of a database, it is very easy to actually store the table in another directory.

While in the control panel, click on each table and look at the blue bar above to see the path name.

Also, do you have Bill Parter's database anaylizer? If not, that may show you something.

Correction on finding the tables path names. Go to the control panel, right click, choose View and then choose Details.

A long shot - but the price is right: We just developed a "missing data" problem on a table "used extensively as a lookup". In my case, there was a set with a one-to-one link, with the lookup table as the child. In doing some other work, I had changed the link to include "Cascade changes/deletes". Whenever data in the parent field was changed (but NOT in the original data entry) during a lookup, it would change or delete the data in the child table. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jay...but no dice. The data that decides to delete itself is in a date field; the data never needing to be changed, as they are entry and exit dates that stay constant.

The IT Department thinks it is the difficulty using Alpha 5v4 with Windows 2000. I will upgrade to Alpha 5.5 when it is out...which it may be out, now...I'll check.
                            Thank you!

                              Wanda,

You mention something in this post that is interesting. The date fields are for "entry and exit dates that stay constant" How are these dates initially entered? Manually, thru field rules, or calculated? There may be issues in those areas. The only dfficulty I have seen on this forum (I am no Win 2000 expert or even amateur) is getting user rights set correctly so data can be accessed. Search for "Win 2000" or "Windows 2000" I think you will find a number of posts.

IT departments always blame what they don't know. It can never be something they should know about. Since Alpha is not made by the great "gods" at Microwhatever, it is easy to blame.

You're right, Jerry...I have always detested the monopoly of Microwhatever. A lot of their products are inferior to other products on the market, that unfortunately are not widly known about - such as Alpha. I think it's an understatement to say that most of us Alpha users want to see more agressive advertising of Alpha products...I've never understood why they havn't advertised more.

Anyway, no - the fields are manually entered. The fields are, however, used to calculate aniversary dates of the entry and exit dates...could this be causing a problem, I wonder?

I will search Win2000 and Windows 2000 later today, or next week. Thanks for the suggestion!

                                Regards,
