Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    update indexes

    Hi Phorum,

    I have the following script on a button named "Reindex" and it does a
    good job of updating the production indexes for 7 different tables.

    dim files as p
    dim tbl as p
    dim table_name as c
    dim location as c
    ' dim count as n

    statusbar.clear()
    statusbar.set_text("Updating All Production Indexes")
    statusbar.disable()
    hourglass_cursor(.T.)
    on error goto noproblem
    files = filefind.first(A_DB_CURRENT_PATH+"*.dbf")
    count=0
    WHILE .not. files.eof()
    table_name = files.name()
    tbl=table.open(table_name)
    tbl.update_production_index()
    tbl.close()
    count=count+1
    files.next()
    END WHILE
    statusbar.enable()
    statusbar.clear()
    ui_msg_box("Note","Updated"+str(count,3,0) + " indexes.")
    noproblem:
    resume next
    end

    However there are other indexes in that app that I would like to
    update as well. The app has 7 tables and it resides in the same
    folder as the data.

    I need help on this.

    Thank you in advance,
    efs

    So why can't you create a button in the appropriate place and use the same code but change the names to protect the innocent?

      7,

      Guess I don't really understand your question.

      Your script should update all the indexes for the 7 DBF tables in the application's current folder. This assumes of course that no one else on your network is using any of the tables when you run the update.

      What else are you interested in doing?

      Updating indexes for tables in other folders?

      Updating indexes for tables in other databases, also located in the same folder?

      Updating indexes for tables in other databases, located in other folders?

        RE: update indexes

        Hi Tom,
        The folder that this app resides in has 7 tables and 2 sets. No other applications are in this folder. I have several indexes on each table,
        which means that there are more than 7 indexes in the application. The
        update counter indicates that 7 indexes have been updated when the
        script is run, as shown on the message box. When I look at the script
        I get the idea that only the production indexes are updated. Am I
        reading the script wrong? If so, why doesn't the message box show that
        more than 7 have been updated? OR .... am I misinterpretting what a
        production index is?

        Thanksatunforyurtime,
        efs

          RE: update indexes

          Hi Tom,

          I should have added that it is a stand alone app, no network involved.
          Also, the seven tables and 2 sets are all a part of a single database.
          Every database that I develop resides in a unique folder located at
          C:program filesa5v4unique_folder.

          Thanks again,
          efs

            RE: update indexes

            Are you confusing "index" with "index tag", the common term for the "index names" within an index?

            When a production index is updated the "tablename".cdx file is rebuilt, updating all "tags" in the "index". If you look in the "define indexes" expression builder for a table, you will see a list of the "tags" that you have defined. When you choose to update the indexes for this table, only one "index" is updated, the .cdx file, even if twenty tags existed.

            The terminology is twisted but you are getting the result you want from your script.
            There can be only one.

                I agree with Tom, "Your script should update all the indexes for the 7 DBF tables in the application's current folder." Try adding the names into your script.
