Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculating Hours Worked

    Can anyone help me calculate the difference between a start time and end time. The result will give me hours worked for an employee.

    RE: Calculating Hours Worked

    If the time is entered as military time, you can just subtract the end time from the beginning time in the field rules. The result would go into another field that you could call TOTALHRS, for instance.

    I have a feeling, though, that there is more to your question. Let me know, please.

      RE: Calculating Hours Worked

      I was hoping to make entry faster and easy by avoiding the use of military time. I was hoping to use a technique like excel, where you can enter time in a easy to enter formats like: 3pm, 3:15pm or 1a, etc.. Thanks for your help

        RE: Calculating Hours Worked

        You can create a look-up, in field rules, for the data entry operator to chose the regular time (i.e. 2:00 p.m.), and have the military time entered.

          create some calc flds
          1. calc->st = toseconds(starttime)
          2. calc->et = toseconds(endtime)

          calc=calc->et-calc->st/60

            Brian,

            There is a way to do this but I don't remember how. No doubt there may be an answer on this board somewhere. Try a search using time, time format or other words that may be used to describe the answer.

                  RE: Calculating Hours Worked

                  Brian,

                  I created a way to record & track time for my employees. I believe I got the basics from somebody else that was posted somewhere on an Alpha BBS, compuserve, or maybe even the old website. I began using this format just over 5 years ago and can't remember who to give credit to for the basic premise. But here's how it goes.

                  For start time I have two fields; INHR & INMIN.
                  For stop time I also have two fields; OUTHR & OUTMIN. There are other fields that are calculated that manipulate these four fields to determine duration and total hours paid based on number of workers on job.

                  Data entry is about as simple as it can get, but it is in military format.

                  When I am ready to enter start & stop time the cursor is in the INHR field. I enter (for example, 7:00 AM) 07, since the field is a Numeric with a length of 2, the cursor automatically jumps to INMIN after I enter 07, and I enter 00. As fast as you can type 0700 is how fast entering the start time is. The "very" next fields are OUTHR & OUTMIN. If the employee worked until 3:30 PM I enter 1530. Again, as soon as the 15 is entered the cursor moves to the OUTMIN field and I enter 30. Again, there are other related fields that that calculate duration & total hours depending on the number of workers.

                  I like this method because data entry is very quick and I don't have to mess with the : or enter AM or PM.

                  If you would like more detail, let me know and I'll help you out. I've been using this for 5 years and haven't seen any other time feature that would even get me to think about changing my methods.

                  Mike
                  Thank you,
                  Mike Konoff
