Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    The board is really s l o w ...

Is it just me, these messages are now consistently slow to load. I go to a couple other sites - I have become very involved in a new landscape group I have joined - and THEIR boards go fast as per usual.

I wonder at the number of messages that have to get sorted -every message re-indexes the list to maintain LIFO order. IS this an issue? It would mean we need to archive some messages - maybe cull out earlier than 2000.

Or is it the server is full..

    Or am I full?

No speed problems here. Although I am wide-band, if that makes a relative difference at all?

No Stephen, it's not you. It has happend to me on occassion, usually on a Friday or Saturday. Don't know what causes it. I have a phone modem. Would like to go DSL but $65 p/mo is a bit spendy. That's what happens when there is no competition.

Well - I am on DSL and it runs slower (way slower) than when I log on from a modem at home. Maybe if I ignore it, it will go away LOL
I start logging on here, open another browser window and visit my other forums, checking back to see how Alpha is coming along. Kinda like waiting for version 5! It gets there, though.

            Steve,
it must be your connection, since many of us don't experience this.

I have had this as a problem. It lasted for a few days last week. At first I thought it was my machine at home but it was also from the office, both connections are ISDN. Now it has gone away so it must have something on the net.

For whatever it's worth, I am another individual who finds NO problem at all with the speed of this board as my connection speed is consistently good. I visit the site several times a day via cable modem and I've never experienced any kind of slow down.

Sometimes I could not connect to this site [usually on Sundays], but that happened only on rare occasions.

And all of a sudden it is back up to speed. Wish I knew what it was... Oh well.

On the other hand, maybe it's a good thing that we *don't* know what causes such aberrations!

This is exactly how it slows down and speeds up for me using a phone dial up connection. I'm not so sure it's due to our connections, at least not by themselves. To say it's a problem with the board is not quite accurate either as not many experience this at the same time.

                      Oh well......
