Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Revision

    Hi Phorum,

    In a PO application where revisions are quite frequent, I added a num
    field "revision", with the following field rule:

    if(isblank("revision"),revision=0,revision=revision+1), as a required
    condition. I expected this to place a 0 in "revision" when the PO is
    initially written, and then anytime the PO is entered for a change that
    it will increment by 1. Guess What! No workee! The intended use for
    this is when the 4 computers (not on a network) are updated by an
    append operation it can discern which records to append.

    Thank you for reading,
    efs

    Would it be better to test for "Entry" status, and put zwero in the field, then make the field incremented on each change?

    or maybe,

    if(revision

      RE: Revision

      You don't need to make an assignment to the field name in a field rule calculation for that field. Try:

      if(isblank("revision"),0,revision+1)
      There can be only one.

        Thank you,
        It doesn't enter 0 on the initial entry nor does it increment on a
        change.

            RE: Revision

            Well of course it does. I misread your original

            "if(isblank("revision"),revision=0,revision=revision+1), as a required condition. "

            A required condition expression will never place a value anywhere. A required condition is a set of circumstances under which the record cannot be saved without entry into the field. That is why it must return a logical true (save the record) or false(don't save).

            You'll probably want to script the onsave event for the form by which changes are made. Increment the revision field every time the record is saved.
            There can be only one.

              RE: Revision

              Try the CanSave instead of the OnSave.

              If you update the field in the CanSave event, you can do something as simple as saying:
              TableName->FieldName = NewValue
              because the table is still in the edit mode.

              If you do it in the OnSave event, the table is no longer in the edit mode and you must do something like:
              TableName.change_begin()
              TableName->FieldName = NewValue
              TableName.change_end()

                Hi Cal,
                Can I replace the "TableName->FieldName = NewValue" with a conditional

                  Hi Stan,

                  I tried many variations of converting a blank field to a zero as well
                  as adding 1 to any other value>0. None of them will do the job.

                    Try this script on the Can Save Record event, it should work

                    t = table.current()
                    if t.REVISION !=0 .and. t.REVISION

                      I am sorry I did not pay attention to what I was doing. But this should work,
                      Add a second filed to the table
                      Revision_2

                      And set the script for the Can Save Record event to

                      t = table.current()
                      t.REVISION_2 = t.REVISION_2 + 1

                      And make the REVISION field a calculated filed
                      REVISION_2  1

                      Now I got it right I hope

                          Hi Stan,
                          Currently the following is on the cansave event for the form:

                          orders_new->Revision = if(orders_new->revision
                          revision+1)

                          However it does not place a zero in revision when filling the form, nor
                          does it increment the value if I tab thru the form again.

                          Thank you for your interest,

                            I had a typo, that I just corrected and now it will increment each time
                            I tab thru the form, but it won't set it to zero initially.
