Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Generated Errors

I have a one table application; 4 fields and 3 calculated fields; one form with an embedded browse. All works just fine.

I created a report, it works fine as well. Then I added a report footer with calculated fields in the footer to show totals. Saved the report and ran it. Got the following message:

"alpha5.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. The program will need to be restarted." "An error log is being created"

I can make changes to the report, form etc. but when I run the report, I still get the error message.

I created a new report and it works. No error messages.

Wondering what happened to cause the report to be corrupted? Where do I find the error log? Perhaps that will give a clue.

I found a similar post and the problem was resolved by copying the app to another drive and then copying back again. That didn't work for me.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    kenn

The error log is probably in your root directory, most likely "c:\". No idea what it would be named. I would view file details in explorer and order by date modified to try to locate it.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

Followed your suggestion. It's not listed in Explorer so must presume it didn't make a log backup.

        RE: A5 Generated Errors

I have gotten similar results creating a report. What I finally discovered to be causing the problem was this:

assume the report has five columns,

There are several groups, that sum each column, and give totals for each group, and grand totals in the footer (requiring a calculated field for each group, and one for the grand total in the footer.)

then total each row going accross (more calculated fields), an additional column.

and then get a total for that column in each group and the grand total. Typical report, probably.

But where it was bombing was that I was having this last column recalculate each of the individual coploumns, and add them together, to get the total for a group and then the grand total. While technically okay, all I needed to do was just get a total for that column. When I changed it it worked okay.

Prior to that it would preview, but bomb on print when run from scratch.

Do a search/find for "*log.txt" and "*.log" files and you'll find a lot to look at. Almost all will be plain text files and just dbl-clicking them in the search results window should result in notepad opening them (*.log files aren't always associated with notepad but you can change that).

If you using W2K Pro right click on My Computer > Manage > & the Computer Mgt. window will open. Find & select Event Viewer in the Tree pane on the left and you'll see 3 logs on the contents pane on the right (Applications, Security & System). Dbl-click them to view 'em. Good luck getting anything more useful than the offending application or process (which you already know).

            Ken,
I was just looking at a thread on the Phorum that I think occurred last spring regarding app error problems with HP printer drivers, the mfc*.dll file, print preview, & calc's in reports and the guy that started it was trying to do a very systematic troubleshoot of the problem. I can't remember who started it (maybe a Martin ???) but I'm pretty sure Ira Perlow had a contribution to it. I just did a search of App errors, HP drivers, MFC, Print Preview, & Ira Perlow (962 returns!!) and couldn't find it but I think it may speak right to your problem if you can find it. It's a good thread to learn how they figured out the different things that were causing crashes. Sorry I couldn't find it tonight.

some HP and NEC (that I know of) cause crashes with Alpha - HP G500 series, among others. The fix is to use a different driver.

But the symptoms you mention don't sound like printer problems.

I have a HP Deskjet 855 Cxi for a number of years now and have never had a problem with the printer causing the crash. I'm sure it's not the printer since I was able to recreate th report and it works fine.

The report in question was working Ok with 3 columns set up as calculated fields where one calc referred to another calc field, etc. The carash began when I placed the same calc fields in the Report Footer.
