Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Sort Sequence

I am currently running a report with a sub report. The report functions fine. prints in the sequence of the primary file.

All attempts to change the sort sequence are rejected. I have tried queries, setting the sort sequence within the report, and set the report to prompt for the sort criteria. The results are always the same. Is it possible to change a sort sequence for a report.

The parent has several indicies: state; company; name; and combinations of the fore mentioned. none work with the report.
the set is linked on reference no to all subordinate files.

I have compacted the database. no help.

any advice or suggestions are welcome at this point.

    thanks

    RE: Report Sort Sequence

    Robert,

I'm a bit confused though, by you 1st paragraph wher the report is working OK. Which report are you trying to sort, the main report or the subreport? If its the sub-report, could it be there is an index or a sort in the main report that is tyakint priority? You have set the sort order someplace where it is a priority over what your trying to do.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: Report Sort Sequence

      Bob,
One thing you might try: if you don't have any groups, you could create one ( based on the sort order you want ) and have no header or footer for that group, and that might get you the sort order you want.

        RE: Report Sort Sequence

        Bob,

Is the report based on a table or a set. If the latter, is the sub-report based on a different table from the report. Remember, sub reports have their own sort properties.

          RE: Report Sort Sequence

The report is based on a set. the sort sequence is aimed at the parent. the subreport is passed strictly by the linking key.

          i will attach the sample.

Thanks for the reply. so far no success in the report.

            RE: Report Sort Sequence

            Bob,
I played with your report a bit, and no matter what I put in the detail order expression, once I saved the report and went back in it disappeared. The only way I could get it to sort was to do what I mentioned above. Made a group on reference no.( group properties no header - no detail ). Seemed to work. When I deleted the subreport, the report held onto a detail sort order. No idea what's going on, but the group thing is a possible workaround.
One more thing: if you delete the subreport, put in a sort order in the detail properties of the report, and then add back the subreport, it looks like it might work. No idea why.

              RE: Report Sort Sequence

Everyone thanks for your input. I have removed the subgroup. from the report and moved the print line into the report. this gives me control of the sort sequence. I am removing one file from the set. this report was originally designed to compare two years side by side. Now only one year is needed. Adjusting for the one year and eliminating the subgroup removed the sort problem.

              thanks for your input.
