Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help menu problem

At the top of the screen we have a menu bar listing
    File View Help

Under the HELP topic, there is a sub menu called BOOKS
Under Books there are three choices, Getting Started, User's Guide and Xbasic Reference Manual.

I get nothing when clicking on any of these three choices. How do I set the path to these menu items? Is there an .ini file somewhere?

I think you need to have Acrobat Reader installed.

You should have the three books on your product CD. You might try running acrobat or Word and load the files from your cd.

I have Acrobat reader installed and the books are on my hard drive in the subdirectory called "books" under the program files subdirectory. I just need to point to them somehow, I think.

            Jim,
I just went through this. Click on start, then help, then in the index put in associations. You'll get instructions on how to associate file extensions with applications. Acrobat files have the extension .pdf which you'll associate with the Acrobat application.

You can also view the books by opening the Acrobat reader and then opening the books from the Acrobat menu. The books are in Program Files/A5V4/Books. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I will try that. I downloaded my files in Word format so I will do that.

You misunderstood my problem. I know where the books are. I know how to access them. I know how to associate files with extensions. If you go to your HELP tab in Alpha 5, do you see the BOOKS option and can you access the books from there? I can't.

Im pretty new at all this, but I just put the the cd in, go to "my computor", select books, then the one I want to read; or in my case print out. Personally, I reckon the program should include an instruction book in print.

Yes. When I click on books in the help menu, I get a list of 3 books. Clicking on one of them opens Acrobat reader and the book.

                      Jim,

May I suggest you make a shortcut on your desktop to whichever book you normally use.

I prefer Word to Acrobat, so I have a shortcut to xbasic.doc that opens the file in Word

I find this more usable for my purposes.

Please dont get me started on the printed manuals thing.

                        RE: Help menu problem

I think this query is getting out of hand. I know how to make shortcuts to Word and how to find the books and how to open them. I was just wondering why they don't open when I click on them under the help menu. Apparently it works for some of us but not for me. Also, apparently, others have found a way around the problem (as I have) but none of these messages have told me how to make my help menu work correctly. I find no option to set the path to the books. Maybe the books need to be in the program file directory and not under their own. As I said, it is getting to be "not worth it" any more so let's just forget it.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

                          Jim,

The help item works for me.

I checked where I installed the books and the program is in
C, program files,A5V4 (the default I believe) while the pdf files are installed in a subfolder entitled "Books".

                            RE: Help menu problem

That may just be my problem, Bill. My program files are installed in C:A5 which is not the default. The books are installed in C:A5Books

I think I will temporarily create a directory named C:program filesA5V4Books and copy the books there to see if the Help menu will access them.

I just recently changed my C:A5V4 subdirectory to C:A5 since I expect to be upgrading to A5V5 sometime soon, I hope. I just installed A5V4.50 and don't see much difference in performance over V4.2. From home, I can't access the network at work any more. It takes so long to access the files that the program stops responding.

Anyway, thanks for the help Bill.

                              Jim,

                              Sorry If I upset you!

Reason I use the shortcut to the word doc is because it is 2 times faster and I prefer word over acrobat reader. When you start the xbasic manual from a5, it uses acrobat reader.

                              Thanks
