Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I force a calculated field to be calculated

    My apologies if this has been covered - I am new here and the amount of information is a little overwhelming.

    I have just added a calculated field to a database. I would like its value to be set for all records currently in the database; however that doesn't seem to happen unless I modify (or at least access) one of the fields used in the calculation.

    Can someone help me?

    Susan:

    If you've added a calculated field to an existing table you should probably use the Update utility. Get there by Choosing the 'Operations' tab of the Control panel and then Click the 'New' button above. Select the 'Update records' option and Click 'Next' - the select the table involved - then click finish.

    A genie will appear to help. Us that and enter the field and calculation to be done upon it.

    I think this will get you started.

    The hard way for only a few records would be as you indicated -- make some small change in the record, save it then change it back and save it again. You would have to do this for each record. BAD

    Let us know how you do.

      Ken - thanks for your quick reply - I haven't investigated Update, and it's a resource I could have used long ago.

      In this case, it didn't quite work - I got an error 'Cannot update a calculated field - FIELDNAME' when I ran the Update. I got around this by temporarily setting the field to 'user-entered', running the update, and then setting it back to 'calculated'. Now that it's initialized I don't think I'll have any more problems.

        Susan,

        You can choose re-evaluate field rules from the place where you create field rules (choose Rules from the pull down menu). This will go through each record and re-calculate that particular field. You may choose to mark (or not mark) each record which is not currently calculating correctly.

          To Susan: Whoops, in my instructions I forgot that one point to reset the field rules prior to the update. Intuitive that you found that and worked around CHEERS for that.

          To Jim:

          Darn it Jim, It didn't tell her about that method because the two times I've tried that, it didn't work. Must have been something I did wrong and you might speculate for me what that might have been. Help another helper, please.

          Thanks to all

            RE: How do I force a calculated field to be calcul

            Susan,

            Here's a script I used to recalc values in calc field, so I don't have to change a field value. This will recalc all fields in a table:

            t=table.current()
            t.fetch_first()

            while .not.t.fetch_eof()
            t.change_begin(.f.)
            t.change_end(.t.)
            t.fetch_next()
            end while

            If you want to recalc only one field:

            t.change_begin(.f.)
            t.change_end(.t.)

            Please note that the .f. and .t. are VERY important - if you just used () for both begin and end, it will NOT work.
