Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

generating a report with a DATE RANGE

Hi there. I am a new user of A5, and I'm having some confusion with reports and queries (maybe someone can clear this whole mess out for me!! :-)

I am working on a database that is fairly simple in structure. It has only 12 fields on one table. It contains sales information, some items specifically, date of sale, customer name and address, and sales rep.

I would like to generate reports that would allow me to (using a user entered variable) enter a start date and end date of the report.

i.e. between the dates of 05/15/2001 and 07/15/2001, how many sales did sales rep #1 (or whichever rep I want) do?

Is there a way to do this? How can I, by using a menu/button system, generate reports that will first prompt the user to enter search criteria. How do I write the syntax for the searches?

I realize that there is the query by form etc., but I am having a really hard time applying it to my needs. You see, I am building a database for someone other than myself to use, so I would like to make it as simple for them as possible, and give them access to all their reports etc with the click of a button. Am I being unrealistic.

I am grateful for any help you can give me.

    Thanks a heap!

RE: generating a report with a DATE RANGE

Elsie, If you want the user to specify a start and end date each time the report is run, use the Label Properties to do it!
Define your label, then open Label, Properties, and click on the Records Tab.
Click the arrow beside the Filter Expression box to expand the box.
Double-click on under the Variables column.
At the prompt, enter the text such as Enter Start Date
Change the type to Date (assuming your field is a date field)
Click OK - you'll be back in the Filter Expression box with a variable filled in
      Enter the condition

OOPS - forgot about the limits of this forum - on the line Enter the Condition, enter the condition as GT sign or GTEQUAL sign Date_Field_name. Or LT sign or LTEqual sign.
        Hope that made sense!

            Elsie,

If you have the X Basic book from Dr.Peter Wayne, look for Date Dialog form.

Very simple to use and also can be used with any form in your application requireing date ranges.

If you do not have the book (there are two of them) you should buy, very good investment.

            Regards

have a look for "SET DATES" in the code archive for the method I use for setting date variables for report/query/operation filters.
              I hope its useful.

on the line Enter the Condition, enter the condition as > or > = Date_Field_name. Or " or " = .
                There can be only one.
