Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Symantec Shadow Ver 6

A client site uses Symantec's Shadow software version 6 to create a master CD on their master pc. The CD contains a snapshot of the master pc (contains all software, including Word Perfect, Alpha Five Ver 4, etc). The CD is then loaded onto the remaining 5 pc's which are now identical copies of the master pc. The problem is this:
A5 is installed on a pc.
A5 is started and the A5 registration number is keyed in.
2 weeks later, the master CD is loaded onto the pc.
    The user starts A5.
Alpha asks for the registration number, even though it has been previously entered.
Question: How do I (or is it possible) keep A5 registered on the pc each time the master CD is loaded? The reg number must be stored in the windows registry somewhere.
    Thanks for any help.

    RE: Symantec Shadow Ver 6

    Hi Gary,

You KNOW how limited my Alpha experience is, but I did take the time to find WHERE the stuff is stored in the registry.
I have a three seat license with 16 digits for registration number. This shows up as follows.....
    [gotta use front slashes]

The keys for both of these is 'Register'

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/ALPHA SOFTWARE/ALPHA FIVE 4.0/USER

    and....
    HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/SOFTWARE/ALPHA SOFTWARE/ALPHA FIVE 4.0/USER

    How are you doin' anyway?

Isn'tthere some way to prevent the master cd from "re-installing" alpha 5? i.e. copy all files, except installations?
What else have you been up to?

I may be missing something, but this sounds like a case where you could avoid a lit of copying etc if you set up a simple network. Perhaps windows peer to peer if the PC's are local? Am I off base here?

I'm not familiar with shadow, but we do use symantec ghost. Although it is easy to ghost an image of the whole pc, Ghost does allow you to select just certain directories to ghost.
So, you might suggest to your client that they create a "D" or data drive (or directory) and just make the image of that instead of all the programs including the registry.

            Russ,
They are running 5 work stations on an NT network. Their preference is to use a master CD rather than installing from the network to configure and update all work stations.

              Pat,
You are correct. The product they are using is Symantec ghost, not shadow. I will pass along your comments to the system administrator. Perhaps he simply needs to dig a little deeper in the manual. Thanks.

                  RE: Symantec Shadow Ver 6

Does each user need a full-blown version of Alpha???

If not, use runtime on all but development machines. Setup a runtime folder on the master machine. Make a cd image of this "user" machine, then, when you need to reinstall, just reload. No licensing issues!

We have over 250 machines on an NT network. We keep a "base image" of 4 different types of machines on the server. When we need to re-image a machine, we just boot from a diskette with networking support, execute Ghost to copy the image from the server to th PC, and within about 1/2 hour, we are back in business.

Unless each user absolutely needs full Alpha, runtime makes much more sense.

                  Tom
