Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strip Numeric

I know this has been discussed before. Is there a handy function to strip numbers from a character expression?

    e.g.
"123 Main Street" ==> "Main Street"

Can't seem to find a function or simple technique.

    Hi Peter,

What about "ISALPHA". You could step your way through the string and delete the non alpha characters.

We must surely be reinventing the wheel here. Somebody must have already done this.

      Thank you Bill,

That will work. Yes, I know this has been addressed
      previously.

WORD function will work. WORD(ADDRESS_FIELD,2) would translate to MAIN STREET.

            RE: Strip Numeric

            Hello Peter,

What would you do with addresses such as:

            123 2nd Ave
            357 201st street
            105 North 8th
            RR 3
            R Rt 1
            Rt 1
            MIU Campus
            etc, etc.

All of the above are real 'street' adddresses.
If we could say the house number is always the first word of the string then it's easy, striping numbers may not work.

              Jim,
Point well taken. I'll have to check my xbasic "archives" to see if I don't have a function or script that I may have swiped off this board previuosly.

I got it! Ok Jim you know that I don't know too much compared to most Alpha people but I really out did myself. Check it out. I have a field called N5. I placed records with numbers and letters. I even used the ones you mentioned. I ran an operation that changed the numbers to "&". I used STRITRAN(N5,"0","&") nine times for each digit. Then at the end of the operation i ran an update with REMSPCIAL(N5). I attached a file to show it.

                  Good job, Bob!

I will try to use your method to create a function. Thanks,

                    Hi Peter,

                    (nice job Bob)

If you want to truly just strip out the numerical values the attached script (or turn it into a function) will do this and preserve the blanks.

                    Good luck,
                    Jim

                      Hi Peter,
Here is how you can also preserve the blanks. Jim's method looks pretty easy but I don't know xbasic. Check out tha attached file. The expression is th same exept where I had the & I placed a blank.
                      Jim,
Does your dcript take out the number and move the character 1 space or take out the number and leave the exact position of the character?

                          Hello Bob,

It removes the numerial and places the next character in its place. It could easily substitute a space for the number if needed.

                            Thanks Jim,
Where is the best place to begin? I only use things like declare variables. Or maybe use something like a print command from action scripting and covert it ti xbasic just so I can fill in dfferent report names etc. I bought Dr Waynes book but it starts out with as simple script and a few pages later it says "Now you have it!". For instance the script you wrote goes right over my head. Could you recomend a very basic book. Or maybe a process for learning?
In your scipt where you have (yourfieldname) if my field name is N5 what would I type? And could you tell me what each line does but don't be too technical.
                            Thanks again for your time,
                            Bob
