Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    assigning info to 3 child tables

    I have 3 child tables that are the same table and I need to assign diff data to each.
    here is the code
    deal has 3 fields to do these connections - "soldstock", "trstock1" and "trstock2". all are connected to the child stock field.

    'sold vehicle
    sold = table.current(2)
    solddate.value = msaledate
    soldacct.value = macct

    'Trade #1
    trade1 = table.current(3)
    dim mt1pdate as d
    mt1pdate = msaledate
    if mtrstock1"" then
    pdate.value = mt1pdate
    end if
    purchfrom.value = macct

    'Trade #2
    trade2 = table.current(4)
    dim mt2pdate as d
    mt2pdate = msaledate
    if mtrstock2"" then
    pdate.value = mt1pdate ' this will not fill in
    end if
    purchfrom.value = macct ' this will not fill in

    Trade1 works fine, trade 2 does not
    all this is in a script called on save

    I am sure I did something wrong, but not sure what

    Not sure why it's not working, but don't you want

    'Trade #2
    trade2 = table.current(4)
    dim mt2pdate as d
    mt2pdate = msaledate
    if mtrstock2"" then
    pdate.value = mt2pdate ' this will not fill in
    end if
    purchfrom.value = macct ' this will not fill in

    Also not sure which are form fields and which are table fields. You obtain pointers to tables ("trade2 = table.current(4)") but never seem to use them.
    There can be only one.

        Dave,
        You might check that your condition
        if mtrstock2"" then
        is really being met. You might want to do an alltrim on the field to make sure it is really empty.

          Dave,

          If it's the same table in all three links, why not do the update in one step? This would be simpler (provided the current view includes the same child record in all three links...) If your parent record is linking to three separate records, all in the same child table, then I'm fresh out of ideas, your swimming in water that's too deep for me!

            RE: assigning info to 3 child tables

            they are 3 different records

            I do not want, but more gymnastics - make a trades db and tradestwo and the on save run an xbasic code to append the records???

            I think ( not sure ) table.current(1) 2 3 etc may have issues.

            I have spent 1.5 days on this doing all kinds of stuff.

              RE: assigning info to 3 child tables

              Looking at your script from this vantage point it's not possible to know the context in which things are being used.

              Please comment each line to tell us whether the names are referring to objects on the form, or fields in a table. If a field in a table, which table?

              The behavior you're getting seems to suggest that there's a naming problem. Alpha Five may be unable to parse the names you are using... or at least it may be doing it differently than you may be expecting.

              One way to test this is to use trace.writeln() statements after each 'if' or 'else' statement. This will permit you to verify that the conditions are being properly evaluated, instead of simply being ignored because of a naming problem.

                Can you post a small example w. some dummy records? I'm sure someone will be able to figure it out.

                    Dave,
                    I took a brief look at your stuff. As Stan said, you create some pointers, but they aren't used. Don't think that's the problem.

                    1)Your Code:
                    mt1pdate = msaledate
                    pdate.value = mt1pdate

                    The pdate.value references an object, not a field name. I think your object was something like pdate2 so it should have been pdate2.value = whatever. There may be more wrong but this is the kind of thing you should be looking at.
                    2) This is my opinion, but if it were my app, I would bounce out to a separate entry form for the inventory (trade one trade two) table. Enter it and save it there, return with a parent.resynch() or something close. I would then disable all the trade1 and trade2 objects on the form. I'm not sure if it's possible, but if there are several deals capable of referencing the same stock number,vital data could be changed from several places.
                    3) Better check where your tables are created. Looks like you have a field rule for terms type referencing a table existing in your Alpha.exe directory. This can create a nightmare later on, in terms of portability.

                      Dave,

                      The script in your download is slightly different than the one you posted:

                      deal = table.current(1)
                      msaledate = deal.saledate
                      macct = deal.acct
                      mtrstock1 = deal.trstock1
                      mtrstock2 = deal.trstock2

                      'sold vehicle
                      sold = table.current(2)
                      solddate.value = msaledate
                      soldacct.value = macct

                      'Trade #1
                      trade1 = table.current(3)
                      pdate.value = msaledate
                      purchfrom.value = macct

                      'Trade #2
                      trade2 = table.current(4)
                      mt2pdate = msaledate
                      pdate.value = msaledate
                      purchfrom.value = macct
                      BOTH VALUES FILLED IN FOR ME

                      parent.commit()

                      It worked for me. For some reason, most of the tables in your app were not included in the app on the controlpanel - so I added them with the big green plus button form the c_panel. Could that be the problem?

                        appreciate it.

                        They still do not for me. It seems i did the same in a5v4.3 and it worked now on v4.5 Hmmm

                        Well I can skin the cat. I shall give the end user the ability to have all the trades he wants. That's how we did it in vb.

                        Thanks all
