Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do i print Word documents?

    Hello
    I am trying to print a Word document using Sys_Shell, but i don't know how i can achieve this?
    Here is the code
    filename = "c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe"
    result = file.exists(filename)
    if result = .F. then
    sys_shell("d:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe o:emaEmployee.doc /p",1)
    else
    sys_shell("c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe o:emaEmployee.doc /p",1)
    end if

    I have used the '/p' to try and print it, but still i can't.

    RE: How do i print Word documents?

    Here's a little snippet from ver 1.02. I haven't yet gotten it converted to ver 4, but you should get the gist of it. The biggest problem is determining the format of the command line to Word. We found it in a VB book. This script prints clients' names and addresses on a Word template by poking them into specific bookmarks. We do this once a month for about 6000 newsletters.

    sys_shell("C:MSOfficeWinwordWINWORD.EXE")
    link = dde_initiate("winword", "system")
    command_string = "[fileopen "p:clericalformsnewsletterNewsletter.dot"]"
    dde_execute(link,command_string)
    link = dde_initiate("winword", ""p:clericalformsnewsletterNewsletter.dot"")

    WHILE .not.fetch_eof(dbh)
    if UPPER(LEFT(MASTER3->SEGCODE,2))="NP".AND.UPPER(MASTER3->FSSTATUS)="G" THEN
    case1 = MASTER3->caseno + " " + MASTER3->supervisor + MASTER3->workerno
    name = w_upper(trim(MASTER3->fname)+" "+trim(MASTER3->lname))
    if .not.isblank("MASTER3->xtraaddind") then
    Addr = w_upper(trim(MASTER3->mailstreet))+", "+w_upper(trim(MASTER3->xtraaddref))
    else
    Addr = w_upper(trim(MASTER3->mailstreet))
    end if
    if len(trim(MASTER3->mailzip))>5 then
    zipper = left(MASTER3->mailzip,5)+"-"+right(MASTER3->mailzip,4)
    else
    zipper = trim(MASTER3->mailzip)
    end if
    addr2 = trim(MASTER3->Mailctysta)+" "+zipper
    'traceln("Name = "+name)
    dde_poke(link,"CASE",case1)
    dde_poke(link,"NAME",name)
    dde_poke(link,"ADDR1",addr)
    dde_poke(link,"ADDR2",addr2)
    command_string = "[FILEPRINT]"
    dde_execute(link,command_string)
    FOR i = 1 to 2500
    trace(ltrim(str(i))+"/2500")
    NEXT i
    counter = counter+1
    ELSE
    END IF
    fetch_next(dbh)
    END WHILE
    quitit:
    UI_MSG_BOX("BCBSS NEWSLETTERS","Printing is COMPLETE - "+str(counter,7,0)+ " Pages")
    command_string = "[FILEEXIT]"
    dde_execute(link,command_string)
    dde_terminate(link)

    If you have any problems, e-mail me and I will try to help.

      RE: How do i print Word documents?

      Excuse me, but the backslashes were removed on the paste.

      sys_shell("C:|MSOffice|Winword|WINWORD.EXE")
      link = dde_initiate("winword", "system")
      command_string = "[fileopen |"p:|clerical|forms|newsletter|Newsletter.dot|"]"
      dde_execute(link,command_string)
      link = dde_initiate("winword", "|"p:clerical|forms|newsletter|Newsletter.dot|"")

      Substitute backslash for vertical bar.

        Hi Thomas
        Sorry if my previous message was not that clear because you have something that is written in Alpha5 and then puts it in Word. But i want to print a file that is in the word format from alpha5. I am so sorry about this, because you have given me more help and I do not needwhat you have given to me.
        Cheers

          RE: How do i print Word documents?

          Now, I'm really confused. Do you want to bring the document into Alpha? Do you just want Alpha to initiate a print?

          We have, on occasion, Created a document in word, then did a cut-and-paste from word into an empty letter or report in alpha. I think that this is OLE. Someone smarter than me can didscuss that. Our only issue there was that the Alpha form of the document is not very stable. The least little thing would make alpha do very bizzare things.

          If, however, you just want to print the word document, the dde commands I sent you will do the trick. You really don't need to "poke" data out to the document to print it.

            RE: How do i print Word documents?

            Thomas-

            I think she wants Alpha Five to open Word, load an existing document and print it...

            Ilesh-

            Sometimes it seems we want the computer to be one program. Microsoft likes to think it could be. But if you write a document in Word, why not print it in Word? If you don't want to print it in Word, why write it in Word?

            Having said that, there probably IS a way to do this - and it probably uses some of Thomases techniques -
            command_string = "[FILEPRINT]"
            dde_execute(link,command_string)
            - sounds promising to me, but I, like you I suspect, have no experience with DDE

              Ilesh:

              If you have V4.5 Build 266 you can use one of the new features... Sys_Print("file name")

              From the technical support area view the WHAT'S NEW IN ALPHA FIVE V4.5 BUILD 266

              Hope this helps!

                Hi
                All I want to do is from Alpha 5, print a word document. So for example i am on a form in Alpha 5, then i want to print that form's report plus a word document to go with it, each time i press the print button. How do i do that? Its prints the report, but just opens the word document at the moment.
                You have given me alot of code, but i would just prefer the specific bit i am going wrong. The code i have so far is in my first or second message(Check the reply's)
                Thanks for your help
