Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RECOMMENDED OPERATING SYSTEM

We are currently using Alpha 4, networked 1 server and 2 other computers using Windows 98. We are upgrading to Alpha 5 newest version as well as getting a new laptop which has Windows 2000 Pro. I would like to know-

If Windows 2000 Pro is a good operating system for Alpha 5?

Or if a earlier version of Windows operating system that seems to run better with Alpha 5?

I appreciate any input regarding this.

My suggestion would be go with win 2000 Pro.

      RE: RECOMMENDED OPERATING SYSTEM

I'm using A5 on win98, winME and win2000 machines - have had no problems with win2000, and it is more stable than 98. WinME is total junk - shoulda never gone there! (actually, it came with a computer - been better off if the thing had DOS only!)

        Ken and Bob,

Thank you for your quick response. I am glad to hear that Alpha 5 works with so many operating systems; compared to Alpha 4 (reality is that DOS is diminishing). As to Kens response WinME is total junk - shoulda never gone there! (actually, it came with a computer - been better off if the thing had DOS only!) I know I could not install Alpha 4 on my home computer with Win ME, thank GOD for this message board, someone was able to help me with the installation.

        Thanks again

          RE: RECOMMENDED OPERATING SYSTEM

          Hi,

I have had a similar problem with trying to load A5 V4.5 on a machine with Win 95 A on. It and runtime 4.5 wont run due to ODBC32.DLL missing.

Does this mean that they need to upgrade or is it a case of just a patch? Will Win95 B do the trick???

I thought it would run on all windows past operating systems?

          Thanks for any thoughts.

          Mike

              RE: RECOMMENDED OPERATING SYSTEM

              Mike,

Good question. Here is what I think is the answer....

The version 4 runtime CD came with a couple of extra directories on it: system and system32. There were several files in the first, including the one that you mention, and one file in the other. These files were typically set up to be copied into their respective counterparts during installation of your program.

The new runtime CD doesn't have those directories on it. I first thought (because there is no documentation on this with the CD) that these were now unnecessary; otherwise, I reasoned, why wouldn't they be on the CD along with the rest of the runtime stuff?

When I tried this theory out, I got the same message9s0 as yo9u did. In fact, after putting that first file back into the installation, I simply got a message that the next file was missing, and so on.

Once I copied those two directories back into my runtime loading area on the hard drive and then re-included them in the installation setup, everything ran fine again.

I wrote Selwyn and asked him about this, but he didn't seem to understand my question. Maybe most who got the new runtime knew to do this right off the bat (many on this board apparently have psychic powers) as I've not seen much mentioned on this aspect, but I had to **** around with it for a while before I got things back into shape.

              Regards,

              Geoff Hollander

                RE: RECOMMENDED OPERATING SYSTEM

                Folks,
I'm not here to defend WinME, but it does work fine with Alpha Five.

I have a 4-machine development network that I use daily, some machines are Win98SE(2) and WinME(2). I have never had ANY grief with networking Alpha Five and these operating systems.

As for my commercial users, once you get past 5 or 6 users, I have found that Win NT4 (and above) is the better way to go.

                Regards,
                --Bob

                    Thanks Geoff,

You have hit the nail on the head the exact problem I have, the only problem is that I dont have a copy of V4.

I only have V4.5 rutime and A5V4.5 + V3.0 + V1.02 so I dont have any access to a copy of these folders.

Would it be possible for you to Zip them up for me and email them to - [email protected] - with a explanation on how you went about it.

If you could do this it would be very much appreciated.

                    Thanks Mate

I have used A5v4 without problems on Windows 98. Windows ME has continual problems, often requiring reboot - Denny
