Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Add blank space on right.

Anybody know of a way to force a blank space at the right end of a field in a report?

Adding the space to the end of the field is no problem. Getting it to take up space on the printout seems to be a big problem. (But it won't surprise me if the answer is simple and I just couldn't find it.)

I have a customer with a series of ID numbers formatted as characters but many have a ".a" or ".1" , etc. on the end while others have nothing on the end. I'm trying to line up the 'decimal point' on all these when displaying them in a column on a report. So far, the best I can get is to add "._" to the end of any ID number that does not already have a 'decimal point'. If I could somehow add ". " (dot-space) and get the space to actually "print" on the report, then everything would line up correctly.

    This is what I want:
    Code:
    12002345.1
    12002346.
        4567.
        5647.a
This is the best I can get so far:
    Code:
    12002345.1
    12002346._
        4567._
        5647.a
And, leading zeros is not an acceptable solution to this customer. They prefer everything right justified and the 'decimal' not lining up rather than zeros in front.

This is strictly an aesthetic issue but any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Cal

RE: Add blank space on right.

    Hi Cal,

This is a feature request (called a decimal tab) I asked for, but I doubt it's been implemented. Here's how to do it.

Create 2 calculated fields. One has the left characters up to and including the decimal. The 2nd calculated field has everything to the right of the decimal point. Now place these two calculated fields on the report next to each other. Set the left one for right justification and the 2nd one to left justification.

    Problem solved!

I'm shocked that Ira didn't see fit to create a function for this.

You might try using CHR(160) instead of a space. This is a non-breaking space and it might work. I can't test it right at the moment, but it worked for me when I was doing something similar in Word.

2 Calculated fields -> works for me! (Like I said, it was easy - just couldn't get my thoughts out of the 'conventional' rut.)

"decimal tab" -> I was going to call it that but would it still be called a decimal tab when it's really just a character in a string rather than a number?? (Just something to ponder.)

RE: Add blank space on right.

Tried chr(160) and this seems to work, too. (I had tried chr(255) which I used to use in DOS but didn't know about 160.)

              - If 160 is used, 2 "chr(160)" items are required to equal the width of one typical letter/number in Arial font. Of course, with Courier it is 1 for 1 as usual.

              - You MUST use "chr(160)". You cannot use "Alt-160" to put the value in the string "by hand" like you can when typing in DOS or a word processor. (Actually, I had to use Alt-0160 in MSWord.)

I must admit that I like Ira's "two fields" solution better just because it quarantees that I can always get correct alignment. But, you never know when the chr(160) will come in handy!

RE: Add blank space on right.

                Bill & Peter,

I believe in self-enablement. The function is way too easy, especially for Cal. On the other hand, if you deem yourselves functionally-challenged....I'll write a function for you to separate the two parts! {:?)

Unfortunately, the function can't drop another adjacent field on a report or form on the fly. If it could, then it could add the 2nd field as needed automatically.

As for the chr(160) method, I intensely dislike the method as the spaces don't match up to an integer number of displayable characters. Even if they do for one font, they will not for others.
