Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Global variables - can't see them

I have declared a set of global variables.
I am using them when reading a record in "Change" mode, before the record is modified, so that I can refer to them when saving the record. The purpose is to maintain a summary record in another file, a single record for each like group of records. (Group is purchase order #, which may have multile addendums.)

I have a button "Change" which puts the record into change mode, but first reads the record into the global variables.

I have a "Save" button which commits the save, then attempts
to use the global variables to modify the summary record by the net of the "old" value and the new value.

When the routine attempts to use the "old" variables, the routine aborts with " old.qty" not found -- but I can see variables, and the "old" quantity in the explorer.

I have tried using both var->old_qty and old_qty, the problem occurs with both.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug ??

    Thanks for any help
    Lowell

Check your script carefully for spelling. If you indeed get the message " old.qty" not found, you may have used "old.qty" somewhere you meant to use "old_qty". "Old.qty" would seem to refer to a pointer "old" and a property "qty".
    There can be only one.

Stan, I have extensively checked the spelling of the variables, there are no mistakes. I have even drug the names over from the explorer window.

What is puzzling to me, is that the first operation (the "change") reads the same set of global variables, and the variables and their quantities are visible in the explorer, yet, when you attempt to retrieve them, they are not "visible" to the procedure.

      Anybody got any ideas ?

In your script did you declare the variables?
        Such as:
        dim global old_qty as n
        -Barry

Barry, the variables were created in the "variable list" pulldown from "Forms/variables" in edit mode.

It is my understanding that global variables need not be
explicitly dimensioned in the script. In the first script,
this works. The globals are refered to by name, and work as
          intended.

In the second script, they do not. I had previously tried
dimensioning them (in the second script), it made no difference.

Later today, I will re-load A5 and see what happens.

          Thanks

It seems unlikely you need to reload A5 and more likely the answer is as suggested above. You may also find it helps to access the variables option on a form, assuming you're running the script from a form.

RE: Global variables - can't see them

Reloaded A5v4.0, upgraded to 4.5, loaded the patceh.

              No change.
However, I could see that some globals entered before all
this took place, were working fine.

I then observed that in the explorer, some of the variables
were duplicated (there ar 60 variables).

Deleted all global variables, ran a compact, and starting re-entering the variables in the variable list. Works like a champ.

The variables do not have to be declared (dimensioned)in the scripts, and do not have to be addressed as
              var->some_thing, just as some_thing.

Looks like the app got scrambled.

              Thanks for your comments

Tom, I really don't understand what you mean by "accessing the variables option on a form". Could you explain further ??
