Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Welcome screen

My question is how do I turn the welcome screen back on with Alpha 5 ver 4.03. The check mark was removed from the screen by someone who was more familiar with this software but is no longer available to help out.

I am a long time user of Alpha 4v6 that is facing the reality of conversion to windows based alpha 5.

Check the properties of the shortcut that you use to start Alpha. There should be a command line option contiaining "-nosplash".

I would recommend copying this line and pasting it to a text editor (in case you ever want it again), then deleting and creating a new shortcut. Should get your normal Alpha welcome screen back.
    There can be only one.

I expect that you are referring to the welcome screen that pops up with a list of databases to select. This has a check box in the lower left corner that can be deselected to hide this on the next startup. Most users (myself included) have unchecked this. After it is unchecked, the only way to get this to come back is by editing a Windows registry entry. If your are comfortable using REGEDIT, you can modify the registry to get this back. However, Microsoft states clearly in the REGEDIT help file:

"You should not edit your registry unless it is absolutely necessary. If there is an error in your registry, your computer may become nonfunctional."

This is no idle threat. I suggest that if you are trying REGEDIT for the first time to be VERY, VERY careful or find a computer expert who has used the program and knows how to use it. To start REGEDIT, go to the run command on the windows start menu and click it. In the window titled "Open" enter "regedit" without quotes. The registry editor will open. READ THE HELP FILES BEFORE YOU CHANGE OR DO ANYTHING. On the left is a window that looks a lot like a Windows Explorer window with options with + and - boxes with "My Computer" being at the top. The entry that must be edited is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Alpha Five 4.0, Application.

      - My Computer
      + HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
      - HKEY_CURRENT_USER
      - Software
      - Alpha Five 4.0
      - Application

If you open the application "folder" you will see a number of entries in the righthand window. Right click on the "Disable Startup Database Dialog" entry. The first option is "Modify". Click on Modify and change the value in the "value data" window from 1 to 0. Click OK. You can now close REGEDIT and the next time you open Alpha 5, the welcome screen is back. One thing about the registry editor is that changes are applied immediately without a warning message. An incorrect value can do a LOT of damage.

        QUESTION:

Jerry Brightbill, I see you posts and answers all over this board. How is the world were you ever able to come up with this information for this specific question?

        You guys amaze me!

          RE: Welcome screen

The process is really quite simple...

have crazy idea / question - experiment - crash computer - scratch head - use foul language - look for answer - go for coffee - try another idea - repeat process - go home muttering

But hey, it's better than real work (which is what I should be doing)

            RE: Welcome screen

If anyone wants a .reg file to turn on the welcome screen, just download the attachment and double-click it. It does what Jerry outlined above.
