Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    APPEND PROBLEMS???

Has anyone experienced any problems with the APPEND operation?

    I am using ALPHA5 Vers. 4.03

On many occasions I had the append operation change information on my records, such as taking the account number from one customer and putting it on the record of another.

I tried to have the records that violate field rules marked, it noted that so many records were marked, but when I looked for the marked records there were none. I ran the same operation quite a few times and I always got the same results.

I tried appending from a table with field rules to another without rules and I experienced problems. I did the reverse, appending from one without field rules to one with rules and I also had problems.

I reevaluated the field rules for violating records and no violating records showed up.

If I append from a table without field rules to another without, than the append works correct.

I had the same experience on prior occasions, but I do not remember how many records got mixed-up. This time from what I could see, there were 10 records out of 1842.

In the field rules, under validation, I have marked that a specific value must exist in another table, but the values all exists.

I have tried and tried, and not been able to find the cause.

    Thanks
    Robert

    RE: APPEND PROBLEMS???

Not sure what is happening, but would look at an outside source of problem.

I have never had alpha mess up an append in any version unless i errored. I have done this

I have a table append several times a day with all kinds of field rules and a lot more records with never a problem.

    Wish I could help

      Have you rebuilt your indexes?

        RE: APPEND PROBLEMS???

Bill, I have rebuilt all the indexes, compact the database, check if any of the data is incorrect and violating field rules and more.

I dont know if any of the records may be corrupted, and I dont know if there is a way to check the record with the exception of field rules reevaluation.

The tables and sets seem to be working perfectly, except for the appending problem.

If anyone has any other way of checking for corrupted records, I would like to know how.

        Thanks for the help.

You said "I tried to have the records that violate field rules marked, it noted that so many records were marked, but when I looked for the marked records there were none. "

Did you check the VIOLATED table? This is where any records that do NOT satisfy the field rules will appear. Also, this table will have an additional field at the end, and this is where Alpha will tell you WHY the record did not satisfy the field rules.

Since your append worked going into a table with no field rules, I'd be willing to bet that you have some "bad" records.

              RE: APPEND PROBLEMS???

Bill, I did note that at the point were the error occurs the auto increment field is not in the proper record order, I wonder if this has anything to do with the problem.

The reason why they are out of order is that I transferred the table from Alpha4. I will current this later and try again.

I will post the results to let you all know.

Thanks a lot for the help.

                RE: APPEND PROBLEMS???

Bill, I solved the Append problem. It seems that Alpha5 wants the Autoincremtnt field and the Record-number ordered the same.

The way I solved was to create an empty duplicate table, than ran a Subtract operation, making sure that the operation was sorted by the Autoincrement field, that way Autoincrement and Record-numbers are in the same order.

I then ran the Append operation and everything went smooth. Therefore the only conclusion I can come to is that Alpha wants them in that order.

The only thing I did was to make them in the same order.

In order to avoid this problem in the future, I will not use Autoincrement anymore, and create a default value for it.

Also, I was not aware that Autoincrement values couldn't be changed after they are saved.

                Thanks for the help.
