Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

I've made a check printing application that allows a user to enter check information and then print it to a check sitting in a nearby laser printer. We have different printers (HP 2100s, HP 6Ls, HP4000 series, HP 5SIs, etc.)

My problem is that the information does not print on the checks consistantly across all models of HP printers. On the 2100s it's okay (this is what I used for testing.) But then when I print the check on a 6L printer, everything is too low. (i.e. the amount in the box on the right-hand side of the check is below the box.) When I print using a 5si, everything is too far right.

I tried changing the printer drivers to all use the HP4 driver (figuring that was the problem.) But the HP6Ls can't use that driver (too old?) It produces garbage where text should print.

I thought about using the Generic text driver that comes with W9x because I can print a text file consistantly across all models. But that's not an elegant way to do things. (I'd only be using it for this application.)

    Any ideas?

    RE: PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

    Scott,

I can sympathize with your problem. We do printed reciepts and payment coupons as well as checks all over the country for Car Dealerships. We specify dot matrix printers and do the printing from Crystal Reports ( about $600.00 ) with similar problems. Not all printers are the same. We have most of our customers on Okidata 520/521 printers and the rest are at their own risk.

One solution though has been to scan the item and then imbed it in the form/report and print it that way. Injets and Lazers are not good at filling in blanks

      RE: PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

I have the same problem, and what I did is to design reports for each printer and the tested the printing on the individual printers, adjusted the report layout until it printed right. It's repetitious, but it was the only solution I could find.

      Sorry

        RE: PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

Most, (or maybe all) laser printers have built in default margin settings, which are not all the same. There are ways, depending upon the printer, to change these margins.

It sounds like your problem is that your different printers don't all have the same default margin settings. You should be able to imbed margin information into your code, I think.

There are really 2 groups of margin settings. If you just set the ordinary margin information, it will be addititve to the "hidden" settings built in. It's these "hidden" settings that I'm talking about.

I thought about doing this. (Although the thought of doing that really didn't thrill me.) Thanks for the suggestion.

              RE: PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

I did look at the properties of the HP6L printer (thinking there was a margin that could be screwing me up.) There were no margin settings in the properties and the printer has no front panel to set any settings. (It's all done via software.)

I will look at the possibility of adjusting the margins used in my code.

              Thanks for the suggestion!

                RE: PRINTER ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

It is a little hard to tell from the description of the problem but it might relate to margins.

Different printers have different non-printing areas at the edge of the page. For many HP lasers it is 0.25". For inkjets it is slightly larger.

Suppose you have your report set to print to the windows default printer and at home it is an HP6L with a 0.25" non printing edge. Further suppose that you use all the available printing space. Then, when your application is moved to a machine with an inkjet set as the windows default printer you will have layout problems.

I solved this by installing the driver to the inkjet on my development machine and setting it to be the default during development. Anything which works on the inkjet is fine on the laser as the effective page size of the latter is larger.
